\tApple announced a variety of updates to its Maps service for users in the US, a move which brings the company\u2019s navigation capabilities closer to those offered by competitor Google.<\/p>\n
The iPhone maker stated US users are now able to use a \u201cfaster and more accurate navigation” offering “comprehensive views of roads, buildings, parks, airports”, shopping centres and more.<\/p>\n
One of the main updates involves 3D images of major cities including New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A favourites option offers quick navigation to locations users visit daily, with the new service also offering real-time information on public transport.<\/p>\n
Apple said it also redesigned its Siri Natural Language Guidance to make directions sound more realistic.<\/p>\n
Privacy
\nThe company stated Maps doesn’t require users to sign in, emphasising it was \u201cnot connected to an Apple ID in any way\u201d. Personalisation features use on-device intelligence.<\/p>\n
Apple claimed data including search terms, routes and traffic information was associated with random identifiers which were continually reset.<\/p>\n
Maps was also converting \u201cthe precise location where the search originated to a less-exact one after 24 hours and does not retain a history of what has been searched or where a user has been\u201d.<\/p>\n
Eddy Cue, Apple\u2019s SVP of Internet Software and Services, said: \u201cWe set out to create the best and most private maps app on the planet that is reflective of how people explore the world today\u201d.<\/p>\n
