Google\u2019s cloud, hardware and Play Store businesses fuelled 31 per cent growth in Alphabet\u2019s \u201cother revenue\u201d category, which increased from $5 billion in Q4 2017 to $6.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the company\u2019s earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said it sold \u201cmillions\u201d of smart speakers during the quarter, adding one out of every seven Google Home devices activated during the period was a Google Home Hub [1].<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s earnings appeared unaffected by recent controversy, including a backlash against Google\u2019s development of a censored search engine for China [2] and handling of sexual misconduct [3] complaints.<\/p>\n<p>But Alphabet\u2019s growth came at a cost.
