The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind Gets Unofficial VR Release

As virtual reality gaming continues to gain traction with new releases like the highly reviewed Half Life: Alyx, very few publishers are fully supporting the numerous VR platforms. One of the more notable publishers that adds big experiences to the growing VR library is Bethesda, with Fallout 4 and Skyrim both receiving VR ports.

While Bethesda seems happy to bring its most recent releases to PSVR, Oculus, and Vive, fans feel some of the developer’s classic titles deserve the same love. One modder decided to take matters into their own hands with a member of the OpenMW modding team, Mads Buvik Sandvei, releasing a playable version of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind in VR.

The news comes from a Reddit post on the official r/Morrowind page by user gurufabbes123. The post goes into quite a bit of detail about how users can utilize the required mods and the best setup to get the most out of the Dark Elven capital in VR. The new OpenMW VR project actually goes beyond the traditional measures of modding to create an entirely new executable file to run the game. Official versions of Morrowind and its expansions are still required to play. While the new VR mod for the classic RPG may not be the long requested remake for Morrowind or Oblivion, it will definitely prompt another playthrough for the legendary title. Below is a video showcasing just how the game controls in the new system.

For some gamers, it might seem odd that The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind would receive such a mod when more recent titles like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and even the Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas seem like better options. Why would Morrowind get such a treatment when it is definitely the more antiquated of the modern Bethesda output? The dedication of the game’s fanbase when it comes to modding speaks to the sheer passion people have for Morrowind, even 18 years after it originally released

This recent conversion of making Morrowind completely playable in VR is just the next project to bring new life into the title. Morrowind mods have a long history of proving that age doesn’t matter when there is a community dedicated to keeping a game alive. Earlier this year, two big stories came from the Morrowind modding scene with the first being a gameplay video for the Morrowind Remake mod and the other being a new patch for the Morrowind Rebirth mod.

With the release of Morrowind VR, players will now have the chance to escape the shrieking horde of Cliff Racers in the most immersive way. There is some concern from fans that the mod may be taken down by the developer, but with the recent acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft, it may lead to a more lax approach to bigger recreation mods.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is available now on PC and on Xbox consoles via backward compatibility.
