Earlier this year, Dark Horse announced that a new God of War comic was in the works. It is set to bridge the events between God of War 3 and 2018’s God of War, and it’ll likely go a long way in explaining how Kratos went from a rage-fueled machine to the more emotionally-stable Kratos seen in the Norse setting. It takes place right after his defeat of Zeus and Athena, as “he sets sail for the desert in an attempt to distance himself from his home and his shame only to find his rage and guilt follow close behind.”
God of War: Fallen God #1 was originally set to release in June 2020, but as with many things this year, this was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. Now, the official Dark Horse website has updated the release date to March 10, 2021. It should be noted that Dark Horse itself hasn’t said much on the matter, but at the same time, it’s not likely to be a placeholder date either. These typically fall at the end of a month or quarter, so barring any sort of mistake or Dark House announcement, this seems like a reliable release date for the comic.
For those interested in this God of War comic, it’s worth noting that it is a mini-series (though exact run count has not been determined), and this issue is priced at $3.99. It is written by Chris Roberson, with Tony Parker as the artist, John Roshell as the letterer, Dan Jackson as the colorist, and Dave Rapoze as the Cover artist. While seeing it delayed out of 2020 is somewhat disappointing, it’s worth noting that this just makes 2021 a bigger year for God of War.
The recent announced God of War Ragnarok sequel is one of the most anticipated games of 2021, and while very little is known about it as of yet, many are excited for Santa Monica Studio’s next showing of the game. Combined with this new comic run, and fans of the franchise are indeed in for a real treat. It’s unlikely the two connect in any significant way, but many would agree that more God of War is only a good thing.
For now, fans will just have to wait and see what 2021 has in store for the franchise. Since the God of War Ragnarok sequel doesn’t have a release date, it seems safe to assume it’ll fall later in the year, so those who want more before then ought to keep an eye on this comic come March.
