PlayStation Developers Share Their Favorite Video Game Screenshots

Sony’s PlayStation Blog is often a good source to go for the latest news on the company’s consoles and games, but a special post from the end of 2020 did something a bit different. Dedicated to celebrating photo modes in games, the post showed off some memorable photos taken by prominent members of PlayStation Studios teams.

From Nioh 2 Producer Fumihiko Yasuda’s screenshot of the series’ two protagonists clashing to a look at the No Man’s Sky base of The Last of Us 2’s co-director Anthony Newman, there are plenty of great images to see in the post. However, there are a few photos shared of certain PlayStation exclusive games that truly stand out, including one post from Crash Bandicoot 4 Producer Louis Studdert.

While Studdert may be hard at work on the development of the recently teased Spyro 4, the Toys For Bob team member shared a gorgeous photo he took inside Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Placing Miles in the incredibly unique 2020 suit, the young web-slinger can be seen free-falling with a sunset in the background. Creating a rectangular image via a large black border, all the attention is placed on the superhero’s dive through New York City — with the stylish helmet of the 2020 suit being a perfect fit for the photo.

Not to be outdone, a game designer for Housemarque’s upcoming game Returnal captured an epic shot of the Red Dragon flying overhead in Demon’s Souls. Raising his weapon in the sky, Henri Markus took a photo as soon as the dragon loomed overhead. With sunlight being blocked out by the monstrous beast, the shot is one of the most impressive seen in the post. Captioned “living my best life mending the world,” the excellent photo may have been a bit risky to take due to the archer standing right by Markus’ character.

One final image worth highlighting is taken by former Guerrilla Games director and current head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios Hermen Hulst. Capturing a playful image of one of the many easter eggs seen in Astro’s Playroom, Hulst highlights the use of the Helghast from the Killzone series. While Astro’s latest adventure references just about every PlayStation exclusive franchise, this cameo caused Hulst to “burst out laughing” due to all the time he spent with the Helghast during his time at Guerrilla Games.

With even more great photos shown off in the post, such as Counterplay CEO Keith Lee’s photo taken in the gorgeous Ghost of Tsushima, the PlayStation Blog post serves as a great reminder of how powerful photo mode can be. Thankfully, it seems like the popular screenshot tool is here to stay, ensuring that players will be able to take more amazing pictures in 2021 games and beyond.
