Pokemon GO Johto Celebration: All Field and Timed Research Tasks and Rewards

Over the past two months, a number of regional celebration events have taken place in Pokemon GO, and a brand new one is now underway. This time around, players will be focusing on Pokemon from the Johto region, and indeed there is a Collection Challenge as well as some research tasks associated with this new event. For those players that are interested in the Pokemon GO Johto Celebration event research in particular, this guide contains details on all of the tasks and their associated rewards.

To note, there are several batches of research attached to Pokemon GO‘s Johto Celebration event, and they will all be available until Sunday, January 31 at 8pm local time. More specifically, there is some event-exclusive Field Research as well as a number of Today’s View Research tasks, and players that want to complete the Johto Collection Challenge should plan to tackle most of them. That is because the tasks frequently reward encounters with Johto Pokemon, and that is especially true with the Field Research.

  • Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Sierra (2 Max Potions)

Rewards: Ho-Oh Encounter

As mentioned, completing this event-exclusive research is a great way to make some significant strides toward finishing the Pokemon GO Johto Collection Challenge. Indeed, players will walk away from these tasks having caught six of the Pokemon required for it, leaving just three left to find. Those remaining three are Sunkern, Murkrow, and Smeargle, and it is the last one that is likely to give fans the most trouble.

This is due to the fact that Smeargle in PoGO has some unique behavior, only becoming catchable after it has performed a photobomb. Players will thus need to use the game’s augmented reality camera feature until they spot the Normal-type Pokemon and then catch it using standard methods. While this is a slightly more complicated than the process that fans typically need to employ in order to catch Pokemon, it should not prove exceedingly difficult to get Smeargle and complete the Collection Challenge.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS.
