A Star Wars fan has uploaded a re-edited version of Luke Skywalker’s now-famous cameo from the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. The scene is relatively the same (although you’ll have to skip to the 30-second mark due to a copyright claim) apart from one key change: the score. Instead of The Mandalorian’s original score, we hear what’s often referred to as “Luke Skywalker’s theme” from legendary Star Wars composer John Williams.
The music used in the video is a recent rendition of the famous piece of John Williams score called Binary Sunset. Audiences first heard this theme way back in 1977 during the original Star Wars, in a scene where Luke Skywalker looks out onto the horizon from his home on Tatooine, gazing towards the twin sunsets in the distance. It’s a moment of longing and inspiration that’s impossible to watch without getting goosebumps. It will live on as quite possibly one of the most famous scenes in film history.
At the end of the season 2 finale of the Mandalorian, which is appropriately titled “The Rescue,” the titular bounty hunter, Din Djarin, attempts to rescue the force-sensitive child he’s come to bond with over the last two seasons. Things seem to be going well until the infamous Dark Troopers arrive, cornering Mando and his crew on the ship’s bridge. When all hope is lost, a single X-wing arrives and we’re treated to a green lightsaber-wielding Jedi Master who cuts down the remaining Dark Troopers with ease and precision. This mystery Jedi turns out to be none other than Luke Skywalker, who arrives to take little Grogu away to be trained in the ways of the Jedi. It’s a heroic moment, but also kind of tragic, as Mando will now have to say goodbye to his little green friend.
Even though the actual version of Luke’s triumphant rescue scene is scored by a beautiful piece of original music, replacing the music with the rendition of Binary Sunset gives the moment an extra feeling of heroism and familiarity. Giving the audience that nostalgia fuelled dopamine rush that we all crave so much. The recent rendition is also somehow even more epic than the original and manages to sync up perfectly with the action in The Mandalorian scene.
Luke Skywalker’s appearance in The Mandalorian has set a high bar for current and future Disney Plus shows. Elizabeth Olsen recently teased a cameo appearance in WandaVision that would be on par with Hamill’s appearance in the Star Wars series, though that may have already occurred with the surprise appearance by a fan-favorite character at the end of the fifth episode of the Marvel Studios show.
