Half-Life‘s G-Man isn’t exactly known for being a humorous or musically-inclined character. Although he’s present throughout the series, his appearance at the start of Half-Life 2 is perhaps best known, with an almost sinister, menacing tone to his voice and actions. Of course, that’s never stopped fans of the series with access to GMOD or SFM from turning him into something else entirely, and that’s what one clever YouTuber has done now, with G-Man performing the entirety of the original Talking Heads’ Once in a Lifetime music video.
SFM, or Source Filmmaker, is an animation program that Valve utilizes in its own promotional materials to create things like Team Fortress 2‘s Meet the Team video series. After making this software available to users several years ago, fans have spent months and even longer bringing scenes to life with few limits other than their own imaginations.
It’s this software that’s utilized in YouTuber CoreyLaddo’s latest creation, G-Man – Once in a Lifetime. After spending months meticulously animating G-Man, the final result is G-Man pondering life and existence all while he lipsyncs to the original vocals of the song and performs peculiar dances (also taken straight from the 1980 original).
For those who haven’t seen the original music video, it may be worth taking a look at for comparison’s sake. While G-Man’s performance may look bizarre at first glance, CoreyLaddo has done an excellent job mimicking the body language and peculiarities of the original music video. Although, fans don’t have to stop with The Talking Heads. CoreyLaddo has produced a wide variety of game-related videos, but seems to have a particular fondness for G-Man, who has shown up in SFM meme videos and even parodies of other games, like Yakuza Kiwami.
While Valve appeared to have all but given up on the majority of its long-running sci-fi series prior to the surprise launch of Half-Life: Alyx, the fandom has kept its appreciation for these characters and the series as a whole alive partially due to tools like SFM. Fans of other Valve titles like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead have also continued to make new videos with SFM years after the games stopped seeing regular content updates. While it remains to be seen if these games will get the bright return that the Half-Life series did, fans can at least enjoy the free tools Valve has made available to create new stories for these characters, no matter how bizarre they may be.
Half-Life: Alyx is available now for PC.
