Fans of the Jurassic Park franchise may have recently heard of UK-based studio Coatsink Software, which is currently working on the VR title Jurassic World: Aftermath. After Jurassic World: Aftermath was announced last month, it has been announced that Coatsink is being acquired by Thunderful Group in an effort to expand its games segment.
Thunderful, which is made up of Swedish developers Image & Form (the SteamWorld series, The Gunk) and Zoink (Fe, Lost in Random), revealed in a press release that it will pay £23 million (around $29.7 million USD) upfront. Furthermore, there’s an earn-out component to the deal that will depend on Coatsink’s financial performance in the next fiscal year, which could potentially raise the sale price to a maximum of £65.5 million ($84.8 million). Thunderful added that Coatsink will remain independent and, “Be reported as part of Thunderful Games.”
Since it was founded in 2009, Coatsink has been involved in a wide number of projects, including high-profile VR games like Shadow Point and the Esper series. The press release notes that the studio has five projects in development, including games like Jurassic World: Aftermath and Transformers Battlegrounds, in addition to “several work-for-hire and publishing projects” that will “strengthen Thunderful’s existing development pipeline in 2021 and 2022.”
As for why Coatsink was picked to help its games segment, Thunderful CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson said it has formed a good relationship with studio founders Tom Beardsmore and Paul Crabb, as well as other key personnel. Thunderful believes that the studio’s “strong work ethics and corporate culture will be a very valuable strong complement to Thunderful’s existing businesses,” through the release of Jurassic World: Aftermath and beyond.
Jurassic World: Aftermath will release for Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 on December 17, 2020.
