Though Infinity Ward just kicked off a Halloween-themed season of frights in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Mara was dressing up before Season 6 reloaded was even announced. One of the more popular non-campaign operators, Mara’s cute Kawaii skin already seemed like an extreme addition to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare — and then, players discovered it originally included a skirt.
The very first post-launch operator for Modern Warfare, Mara became a popular character for players near the game’s launch. Since then, despite all the additional characters like Call of Duty campaign icons Captain Price and Frank Woods, Mara can still be seen often in many multiplayer and Warzone lobbies. With Mara such a popular pick for players, Infinity Ward decided to raise that popularity further by throwing cat ears on her.
Dubbed Kawaii Mara, the sillier skin is one of the many unrealistic and goofier cosmetics released by Infinity Ward as of late. While some people believe more outrageous cosmetics ruin Modern Warfare by going against its tone, just as many players love skins like the one for Mara. Based on a recent discovery, however, Kawaii Mara could have been even more of an extreme addition.
Posted by Redditor TheLankySoldier, some leftover files in Modern Warfare’s code for the skin indicate that “Mara had a skirt before artists changed it to leggings.” Why the change was made is unclear, though TheLankySoldier believes that the skirt “was probably too extreme” to be added. With Modern Warfare recently adding movie killers Leatherface and Jigsaw to the game, however, this is unlikely to be the reason.
Multiple Redditors in the comments point out that the emblem and calling card that were part of the Kawaii pack show Mara in the skirt as well, further supporting the idea that the skin once included the clothing item. Reddit user someonemayb3 believes it has to do with Warzone, as “long drops would… y’know.” With more dirty-minded players looking up the skirt while dropping into Zombie Royale or a normal game of Warzone, Infinity Ward likely wanted to avoid any problems that would come from this.
Regardless of the reason why it was removed, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Kawaii Mara seems to have once worn a skirt. While not as rewarding as the Texas Chainsaw calling card easter egg, the discovery is still interesting, nonetheless.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
