Emmys Create New Rules for Movies Released to Streaming

2020 has been quite the revolution for the film industry, seeing the pandemic force almost every big-budget film to delay itself or release on alternative platforms. With changes to distribution, of course, comes changes to awards shows. As the line between film and television becomes increasingly blurred, the Emmys have decided to start marking those differences a little more clearly. The updated Emmy 2021 rules have seen a variety of changes, including new rules intended to keep studios from double-dipping with Oscar and Emmy nominations.

The biggest rule change is as follows: “To clarify the distinction between theatrical motion pictures and television movies during the ongoing pandemic, any non-documentary film placed on the [Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences] viewing platform for Oscar consideration will be deemed a theatrical motion picture and thus ineligible for the Emmy competition.” Basically, the Academy is saying that even if a film releases on television, if the studio puts it up for Oscar consideration, it will not be allowed to compete at the Emmys. This rule mostly serves to keep a clear delineation between the two awards shows, and prevent big films from trying to dominate both shows via a technicality.

That’s not the only change, of course. One of the bigger moves is the addition of an award for Stunt Performers. Previously the Academy only recognized stunt coordination, which is still more than the Oscars do, but this new award will recognize the performers themselves who do the difficult, and sometimes dangerous work, of making stunts come to life.

Also added is the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series to give a space for anthology shows that aren’t serialized. Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, on the other hand, have been squished into one category, mostly due to the decline in sketch shows over the years.

These changes have been made both as a response to criticisms from creators, and as adjustments to help separate the Emmys from the Oscars as the market increasingly blurs the lines between films and TV. The question of who will be nominated with these new categories and rules, however, remains to be seen.
