Digital board game publisher Asmodee Digital announced a new adventure game called\u00a0Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0today. The game, based on the popular board game<\/a>\u00a0Arkham Horror,<\/em>\u00a0was previously revealed under the title\u00a0Mansions of Madness: Mother’s Embrace<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Set in the fictional New England town of Arkham in the 1920s, the Asmodee Digital board game pits up to five players against the cosmic terrors of H.P. Lovecraft<\/a>. Each player controls an investigator to fight off cultists and monsters, research clues, and try to hold on to their sanity in an effort to stop the emergence of an Elder God.<\/p>\n

Based on screenshots, the game is not just a digital adaptation of the source material.\u00a0According to a press release,\u00a0Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace<\/em> will be a “squad-based narrative adventure game.” Players can choose one of twelve\u00a0investigators pulled from the\u00a0Arkham Horror\u00a0<\/em>universe, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, one investigator might have high willpower and sanity, specializing in spellcasting, and holding off eldritch intrusions. Another might have high strength and health, with a focus on combat and clearing the way for allies.<\/p>\n

Mother’s Embrace<\/em> will also feature an original story. The original board game is highly replayable<\/a>; specifically thanks to its variety of scenarios, with unique objectives and mechanics. At this time, it’s unclear whether the story in\u00a0Mother’s Embrace<\/em> will change in any way across playthroughs, or remain static. At the very least, with a dozen unique characters to choose from, the potential is there.<\/p>\n

Asmodee Digital\u00a0is notable for bringing popular board games to life in the digital space. Its past efforts include\u00a0Gloomhaven<\/em><\/a>, Catan,<\/em>\u00a0and Ticket to Ride<\/em>, among others. If anything, the quality of those adaptations should inspire some confidence.<\/p>\n

Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace<\/em><\/strong> is slated for release in 2021 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n
