Over the course of his 40-year career, Bass worked for some of Hollywood&#8217;s most prominent filmmakers and produced some of the medium\u2019s most iconic posters. Contributing to legendary directors like Alfred Hitchcock,\u00a0Otto Preminger,\u00a0Billy Wilder,\u00a0Stanley Kubrick\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/killers-of-the-flower-moon-apple-martin-scorsese\/\">\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/a>, Bass also produced title sequences for some of the most popular films of all time as well as some of the most enduring company logos as well (AT&amp;T? That was him).<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Bass passed away due to non-Hodgkin\u2019s Lymphoma in 1996, at the premature age of 75. However, Bass\u2019 legacy has been timeless, with many contemporary posters paying homage to his iconic pieces. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/google-stadia-crowd-choice-release-date\/\">Google even produced a \u2018Doodle<\/a>\u2019 in 2013, in celebration of his 93<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-mandalorian-season-2-posters\/\"><strong>The Mandalorian Cast Looks Totally Wizard in Their Season 2 Posters<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/64lDaAmpvSo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, for those uninitiated, the extent of Bass\u2019 work may be surprising \u2013 he\u2019s responsible for so many celebrated posters, it\u2019s really quite exciting. So here is a selection of the best Saul Bass movie posters.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-Man-with-the-Golden-Arm-Poster.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The poster that launched Bass\u2019 career and made him a rising star of the poster-design world. Directed by Otto Preminger, <em>The Man with the Golden Arm<\/em> follows a jazz musician\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/what-happened-high-school-horror-release\/\">struggle to overcome a heroin addiction<\/a>. Very much a taboo choice of subject matter for the 1950s, Bass reflected the film\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-sims-4-hispanic-heritage-skin-tone-update-controversy-explained\/\">controversial topic<\/a>\u00a0 by creating an equally innovative poster.<\/p>\n<p>The paper image of the cut-out arm of a heroin addict was unlike anything the industry has seen before, and Bass became a popular choice for poster designs.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Vertigo-Poster.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>A prolific partner of Alfred Hitchcock, Bass produced many posters for the celebrated director and even designed the title sequences for films like <em>North by Northwest <\/em>(1959). However, the most iconic poster he designed for Hitchcock has to be 1958\u2019s <em>Vertigo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>How do you design a poster that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/destiny-taken-king-vertigo-map-827\/\">accurately reflects the feeling of vertigo<\/a> (the false sense of rotational movement)? Well, like this. In one masterfully designed image, Bass manages to convey not only sense of vertigo, but also the idea of being stuck in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/unsolved-mysteries-vol-2-trailer-release-date\/\">confusing and overwhelming mystery<\/a>, reflecting the plot of the film as well. Two birds, one excellent poster.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Anatomy-of-a-Murder-Poster.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>How can a poster so simple prove to be so effective? Once called the \u201cfinest pure trail film ever made\u201d, Otto Preminger\u2019s <em>Anatomy of a Murder<\/em> sees a former district attorney being roped into the most forensic and confusing case of his career. As the lawyer breaks down the investigation, he finds himself having to question every detail placed before him\u2026 and Bass\u2019 poster quite effortlessly conveys all of this.<\/p>\n<p>The black outline of the murder victim roots the film as an investigation, but the disassembled appendages gives the impression that everything needs to be <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/spider-man-miles-morales-stussy-s\/\">broken down and studied<\/a>. This is a case (and a film) that requires a systematic attention to detail.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/7ded9f3ec3a4ba80c4dffede71ceb98c.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Writer and directed by John Sturges, <em>The Magnificent Seven<\/em> was an \u2018Old West\u2019 reimagining of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/best-samurai-films-ranked-imdb\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akira Kurosawa\u2019s iconic 1954 film, <em>Seven Samurai<\/em><\/a>. Featuring seven gunfighters hired to protect a small village in Mexico from a group of marauding bandits, the film <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/red-dead-redemption-10-year-anniversary-arthur-morgan-john-jack-marston\/\">became emblematic of the genre<\/a> and firm favorite of many.<\/p>\n<p>As a film with a surprisingly gory subject matter (the titular seven end up having to defend the town by killing all the bandits), Bass designed an understated poster that reflects this bloody focus \u2013 it\u2019s almost as if one of the seven are tallying up how many they\u2019ve killed in blood. It\u2019s not fully known why this poster wasn\u2019t chosen, but it\u2019s pretty apparent how cool it is nonetheless.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-Shining-Poster.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Famously, Stanley Kubrick is as much of a perfectionist as an auteur can get, demanding every detail of a film fits his particular vision.\u00a0Unfortunately for Saul Bass, this perfectionism extended to movie posters as well. Indeed, Bass had to produce over 300 versions of <em>The Shining\u2019<\/em>s poster before Kubrick was satisfied; luckily, the end result is one of the greatest posters of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as a loose homage to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dreams-game-the-shining-overlook-hotel-recreation\/\">film\u2019s most memorable sequence<\/a> (\u201cHere\u2019s Johnny!!\u201d), <em>The Shining\u2019s<\/em> poster design is minimal yet haunting, with the overt yellow reinforcing the film\u2019s unsettling nature.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Schindlers-List-Poster.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Reportedly, one of the last posters Bass produced in his lifetime, his design for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/steven-spielberg-lmno-alien-game-footage\/\">Steven Spielberg\u2019s epic historical drama<\/a>, <em>Schindler\u2019s List<\/em>, never saw wider use. Once again, it is unknown why this poster design wasn\u2019t used, but many have speculated that the poster was perhaps too pessimistic, even for a film with such a depressing subject matter as <em>Schindler\u2019s List.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the imagery employed by Bass is striking and is held up as some of his finest work by fans.
