A dead genre by today&#8217;s standards, arena shooters set the groundwork for most FPS titles today and are still worth experiencing. Instead of fighting enemies with hit-scan attacks, players could dodge projectiles from enemy demons. These core tenants would form the arena shooter genre. Emphasis on map control is still present since positioning can help open an opponent&#8217;s guard, allowing for an easy kill. It brilliantly dismantled every common trope with the FPS genre while simultaneously setting a few tends of its own.\u00a0<em>Doom&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>Glory Kill system and push-forward combat\u00a0proved to be a major success that some FPS titles have unashamedly copied. Instead of flying through levels with a rocket launcher, players had to strategize how to complete levels with\u00a0<em>GoldenEye&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>various side objectives. Manually aiming weapons was also a great addition that would lay the groundwork for what\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/perfect-dark\/\">Perfect Dark<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>would bring to the genre.<\/p>\n<p>However, what made this game truly legendary was its multiplayer component. Four-player split-screen deathmatch was a blast\u00a0as most would expect, but Rare also included unique modifiers named scenarios that fundamentally changed gameplay. The Man with the Golden Gun and The Living Daylights remain as some of the most engaging alterations to the deathmatch formula the genre has seen.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>DUSK<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DUSK-Double-Shotguns.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Not every arena shooter needs to have a AAA budget to succeed in today&#8217;s gaming landscape. No better example of this exists than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dusk\/\"><em>DUSK<\/em><\/a>, a fast-paced arena shooter developed by\u00a0David Szymanski. Taking inspiration from classic arena shooters,\u00a0<em>DUSK\u00a0<\/em>brilliantly delivers a chaotic single-player campaign that harkens back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-best-retro-inspired-fps-games-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">older era of shooters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>DUSK\u00a0<\/em>doesn&#8217;t rely on 90&#8217;s nostalgia to deliver its vision, either. Every level, every gun, every encounter feels well-crafted and modern while simultaneously\u00a0having as much over-the-top cheese as one would expect. Players can deflect projectiles with a sickle, shoot two-lever action shotguns at once, and move through arenas at incredible speeds. While\u00a0<em>DUSK\u00a0<\/em>might not bring any major innovations to the genre, it is such a\u00a0superb\u00a0arena shooter that it\u00a0deserves a place amongst the giants it was inspired by.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Unreal Tournament 2004<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Unreal-Tournament-2004.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Unreal Tournament 2004\u00a0<\/em>needs no introduction for most arena shooter fans. This game is the pinnacle of party-play FPS titles. Instead of relying on a tightly-balanced sandbox to win genre enthusiasts,\u00a0<em>Unreal Tournament 2004\u00a0<\/em>focused on a plethora of game types and unique weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Capture the Flag, Invasion, Onslaught, and the iconic Assault are just a few modes that this game had to offer. Vehicular combat and varied weapons\u00a0complimented the game&#8217;s variety of maps and modes nicely. Additions such as dashing also allowed newer players to avoid attacks while increasing the skill gap. For casual arena shooters, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ranking-best-first-person-shooter\/\">almost impossible to top <em>UT 2004<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Perfect Dark<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/PERFECT-DARK.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Despite\u00a0<em>GoldenEye 007&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>multiplayer component being nearly cut from the final game, it proved to be one of the game&#8217;s largest selling points. With\u00a0<em>Perfect Dark\u00a0<\/em>being developed with multiplayer in mind from the start, Rare had an opportunity to improve on their last iteration and deliver something truly special.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-shooters-lengthy-campaigns-long-take-beat\/\">10 Shooters With Lengthy Campaigns (&amp; How Long They Take To Beat)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Perfect Dark\u00a0<\/em>is an improvement over\u00a0<em>GoldenEye 007\u00a0<\/em>in almost every way. Better weapons, multiplayer levels, and a dizzying amount of customization options are here for the player to experience. While\u00a0<em>GoldenEye\u00a0<\/em>feels dated by modern standards,\u00a0<em>Perfect Dark\u00a0<\/em>is still a joy to play even today. That is if players can deal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/nintendo-64\/\">Nintendo 64<\/a> version&#8217;s low framerate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Unreal Tournament (1999)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Unreal-Tournament-1999-Facing-Worlds-Map.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/quake\/\">Quake 2&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>online component was such a massive success that many developers sought to chase that success, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/epic-games\/\">Epic Games<\/a> being one of them. Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/unreal-engine\/\">Unreal Engine<\/a> they developed for <em>Unreal<\/em>, they decided to make an arena-based FPS title named\u00a0<em>Unreal Tournament<\/em> that would release right beside\u00a0<em>Quake 3 Arena.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What won some fans of\u00a0<em>Quake\u00a0<\/em>over to\u00a0<em>Unreal Tournament\u00a0<\/em>was the game&#8217;s unique modes and weapon sandbox.\u00a0Each weapon in\u00a0<em>Unreal Tournament\u00a0<\/em>has two fire modes that drastically increase their versatility. While\u00a0<em>Quake\u00a0<\/em>players will never have a use for the Ripper,\u00a0<em>UT&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>starter Impact Hammer can be used to deflect projectiles with its alternate fire. Some of the best maps in the FPS genre\u00a0like Facing Worlds came from this game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Halo 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/halo-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/halo-2\/\">Halo 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was a game-changer for not only the FPS genre but console gaming at large. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/xbox\/\">Xbox<\/a> series of consoles would continue to push online features thanks to\u00a0<em>Halo 2&#8217;s<\/em> quintessential multiplayer experience. Instead of browsing through multiple lobbies or setting up a LAN party, players select their favorite mode and hop straight into a match.<\/p>\n<p>Those features are taken for granted today, although\u00a0<em>Halo 2&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>gameplay sure isn&#8217;t. Nearly everything about\u00a0<em>Halo 2&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>multiplayer is excellent. It takes the casual, mode-focused fun of\u00a0<em>Unreal Tournament\u00a0<\/em>and blends it with the arena-shooter madness that\u00a0<em>Perfect Dark\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>GoldenEye\u00a0<\/em>presented for the N64. Slayer\/deathmatch was the mode of choice for many, yet\u00a0<em>Halo 2\u00a0<\/em>offered so much more than that. Oddball, King of the Hill, Infection, Territories, and\u00a0Juggernaut are just a few fan-favorite modes that this game had.<\/p>\n<p>If all of that wasn&#8217;t enough,\u00a0<em>Halo 2\u00a0<\/em>also has a solid campaign that, while short <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hardest-fps-games-ranked\/\">and incredibly unbalanced<\/a>, offers\u00a0one of the most engaging single-player experiences a shooter can offer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Quake 3 Arena<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Quake-3-Arena-Sarge.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Quake 3 Arena\u00a0<\/em>was a massive risk for id Software at the time.\u00a0A multiplayer-only title that still carries the\u00a0<em>Quake\u00a0<\/em>name was worrying to some. Thankfully, the focus on multiplayer would spawn the height of the\u00a0<em>Quake\u00a0<\/em>franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Virtually everything about\u00a0<em>Quake 3\u00a0<\/em>is perfect. Every gun holds a place in the sandbox, maps are all top-notch, and the game&#8217;s AI bots are surprisingly competent. There weren&#8217;t dozens of modes or a massive weapon roster to set\u00a0<em>Quake\u00a0<\/em>apart from its competition. It&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Quake<\/em>, after all, the biggest name in the genre. All it needed to do was focus on delivering the best deathmatch experience possible.
