The book <\/span>Carrie<\/i><\/strong> by horror\u00a0legend Stephen King <\/a>has been a popular victim for adaptations and remakes since the late seventies. Carrie White\u2019s story has been adapted for the stage, the big screen, and broadcast television. With Halloween just around the corner, it\u2019s the perfect time to talk about what makes Carrie<\/i><\/span>\u00a0a forever timeless\u00a0tale<\/span><\/p>\n

The young and miserable Carrie White is an immortal character for the lonely, the bullied, and the outcast, from Stephen King\u2019s first published novel<\/a>. King created a story that manages to evoke a sense of nostalgia from readers and watchers of all types. Nearly everybody has gone through the high school experience<\/a> whether they embodied the role of a teenager who was popular and mean, much like Carrie<\/em>\u2019s antagonist Christine, or perhaps they were a quiet and sympathetic accomplice like Christine\u2019s friend Sue. But there\u2019s always the unlucky misunderstood one whose story is rarely told, much like Carrie White herself.<\/span><\/p>\n

The novel Carrie<\/em> was released in 1974,\u00a0and packed with many controversial themes like violence, religious stigma, and superhuman abilities\u2014 throughout the story, the titular character becomes better acquainted with her telekinetic powers<\/a> which leads her to seek revenge as she reaches her wits’ end at her senior prom.\u00a0As Carrie\u2019s story grew in popularity, the book\u00a0became\u00a0one of the most notorious banned books in libraries and schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just two years after the book debuted, it had its first movie adaptation<\/a>. Brian de Palma\u2019s <\/span>Carrie<\/span><\/i> (1976) was a huge success, earning over $33 million dollars in box office revenue and many award nominations. Sissy Spacek starred as Carrie White; Spacek has had a steady career since her debut but more recently starred as Ruth Deaver in Hulu\u2019s Castle Rock<\/em> series<\/a>, also paying homage to Stephen King. The movie also launched the film career of Amy Irving who was later seen in the horror flick <\/span>Hide and Seek\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and the television drama <\/span>Zero Hour<\/span><\/i>. More well-known, this movie\u00a0was one of John Travolta\u2019s early roles, he played Billy Nolan, Christine\u2019s boyfriend and of Carrie\u2019s most vicious bullies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
