Rewinding the clock is no easy job. Not every video game publisher is capable of pulling a blockbuster prequel game that is just as good as the original, let alone being a much better game. Some titles may fall short, while others may struggle to live up to the bar that the previous game has set.<\/p>\n

However, these titles are the exception. They are more than video games, but rather a piece of state-of-art. From the highly anticipated<\/a> call back to the good days of the Old West<\/a> to the PlayStation 2 cult classic, here are ten game prequels that are better than the OG, according to their Metascore.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>The Warriors (84)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Taking place during the height of New York City’s gang rivalry in the 1970s, Rockstar’s 2005 game\u00a0The Warriors\u00a0<\/em>takes players on a journey of a gang called The Warriors as they try to run their way to their home turf in one night after being accused of a murder they did not commit.<\/p>\n

The Warriors\u00a0<\/em>is based on the classic cult movie of the same name<\/a>, but it begins three months before the movie’s event. Unfortunately, its movie version\u00a0plunged\u00a0into 65 Metascores, although it received a cult classic status years after its release.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Red Dead Redemption 2 (97) vs. Red Dead Redemption 1 (95)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This entry is more of a case of a close call because the first\u00a0Red Dead Redemption\u00a0<\/em>game scored only less than two points behind\u00a0Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em>. It follows the story of\u00a0Arthur Morgan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the notorious Van der Linde gang<\/a>, and is set a couple of years before RDR1 during the Old West’s declining era.<\/p>\n

At first, Rockstar did not plan to release another\u00a0Redemption\u00a0<\/em>game, but the warming reception upon the first game has changed their mind. Maybe that explains much why Arthur was never mentioned in the first game.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Half-Life: Alyx (93)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Just like the previous\u00a0Redemption 2<\/em>\u00a0entry, VR-powered\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx<\/em>\u00a0is another case of a split decision. The game has 93 Metascores, while its predecessor,\u00a0Half-Life 2<\/em>, falls only three points behind\u00a0Alyx<\/em>. It centers around 19-year-old Alyx Vance, humanity’s last hope of survival, and her fight against an evil alien race known as the Combine five years before the events of\u00a0Half-Life 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The game was so well-made that it received\u00a0a warm welcome<\/a>\u00a0from old\u00a0Half-Life\u00a0<\/em>fans. So, maybe now is a good time to release the scrapped\u00a0Half-Life 2: Episode Three<\/em>, don’t you think, Valve?<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (91)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Hailed as one of the greatest, most excellent prequels of all time,\u00a0Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater\u00a0<\/em>scores a whopping 91 Metascores. It serves as a prequel to all\u00a0Metal Gear<\/em>\u00a0games, with the first title released in 1987.<\/p>\n

Metal Gear Solid 3\u00a0<\/em>takes players on a FOX operative, codenamed\u00a0Naked Snake<\/a>, and his journey on rescuing a Russian scientist, which is set 31 years before the 1987 game’s events. With 3.6 million copies shipped worldwide in a year,\u00a0Metal Gear Solid 3<\/em>\u00a0was a massive commercial success.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Halo: Reach (91)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As a direct sequel to\u00a0Halo: Combat Evolved<\/em>,\u00a0Halo: Reach\u00a0<\/em>is set in the year 2552 during the height of a fictional war between humanity and aliens. The Microsoft exclusive prequel scores 91 Metascores while the latter has 83 to its name. The game\u00a0was highly successful that it marked a new milestone for the franchise, with over $200 million generated within the first day only, and that number still excludes the merchandise.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Deus Ex: Human Revolution (89)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This is another case of a close call, but it’s still worth noting that Square Enix did wonders in rewinding the clock with\u00a0Deus Ex: Human Revolution<\/em>. It serves as a prequel to the original 2000\u00a0Deus Ex<\/em>\u00a0game and is set in 2027.<\/p>\n

Story-wise,\u00a0Human Revolution\u00a0<\/em>centers the story of an ex-SWAT, Adam Jensen, as he connects the dots between his scientists’ disappearance. It also is a fantastic combination of stealth mechanism \u00e0 la\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/em>\u00a0and gun-blazing thriller of\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em>, which makes this game even better than the original.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Assassin’s Creed: Origins (81)<\/h2>\n

Contrary to most\u00a0Assassin’s Creed\u00a0<\/em>games that take place during the fourteenth or fifteenth century,\u00a0Assassin’s Creed: Origins\u00a0<\/em>is set during the old Ptolemaic Egyptian time between 49 to 44 BC; hence we call this 2017 game as a ‘prequel.’ The game lets players take the roles of Bayek, an Egyptian nomad, and the beginning of the formation of the Assassin’s Brotherhood.<\/p>\n

Upon its release,\u00a0Assassin’s Creed: Origins\u00a0<\/em>has sold more than ten million copies worldwide, which proved to be a massive success.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (86)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II \u2013 The Sith Lords\u00a0<\/em>is a prequel to\u00a0Star Wars: Episode I \u2013 The Phantom Menace<\/em>\u00a01999 movie, which it’s safe to say that the game does better on Metacritic (86) than the original film (51).<\/p>\n

The Sith Lords<\/em>\u00a0is set between 4.000 years before\u00a0The Phantom Menace<\/em>\u00a0around an exiled Jedi Knight. In this game, you’re more than eager to confront your past and fight your way to defeat countless restless Sith and restore the Galaxy’s fate.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Metroid Prime (97)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

We can never make a list of top ten best prequel games and leave\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em>\u00a0off it. Released in 2002,\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em>\u00a0is set between the events of the original 1986\u00a0Metroid<\/em>\u00a0game and Game Boy 1991 exclusive,\u00a0Metroid II: Return of Samus.<\/em><\/p>\n

To sum up the story,\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em>\u00a0centers the younger version of our favorite interstellar bounty hunter, Samus Aran, and her attempt to find the missing links in the poisoned world of Tallon IV.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Sniper Elite III (71) vs. Sniper Elite V2 (66)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Lastly is 2019’s\u00a0Sniper Elite III\u00a0<\/em>(71), a prequel to its 2012 predecessor,\u00a0Sniper Elite V2\u00a0<\/em>(66). Set three years before\u00a0V2<\/em>,\u00a0Sniper Elite III<\/em>\u00a0follows Karl Fairburne, the previous game’s main protagonist, as he tries to put an end to Nazi’s newest secret ‘wunderwaffe’ superweapon.<\/p>\n

Even though both games met with mixed receptions from the critics,\u00a0Sniper Elite III<\/em>\u00a0proved to be a slightly better game. The shooting and stealth systems feel alive and fantastic, even though some narratives may come across as bland and outdated.<\/p>\n
