With major franchises such as Assassin’s Creed<\/em> and Call of Duty<\/em> releasing in November to coincide with the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X\/S<\/a>, the second half of October\u00a0is mostly free of AAA games. Naturally, horror developers have jumped on the\u00a0chance to\u00a0release around\u00a0Halloween including Frictional Games long-anticipated\u00a0Amnesia: Rebirth<\/em>\u00a0last week and the next game from Until Dawn<\/em> developer Supermassive Games,\u00a0The Dark Pictures Anthology:\u00a0Little Hope,\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>dropping this week.<\/p>\n

Originally planned for release in the Summer, Supermassive Games was forced to delay\u00a0The Dark Pictures: Little Hope<\/em><\/a>\u00a0due to the ongoing global pandemic creating unforeseen issues with development. Now the wait is almost over, for those considering picking up the\u00a0latest entry in Supermassive’s anthology series, here’s everything there is to know\u00a0about\u00a0The Dark Pictures: Little Hope<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Built on the success of Until Dawn<\/em>, The Dark Pictures Anthology<\/em><\/a> is a series of eight “intense standalone horror games” that each explore different themes and sub-genres of horror. Supermassive Games originally intended to release a new instalment every six months, but understandably that goal has been a little too ambitious for the developer. The anthology series began in August 2018 with the release of Man of Medan<\/em>,\u00a0followed by Little Hope<\/em> later this week. While it’s known that there will be eight games, so far, no additional games in the series have been announced.<\/p>\n

The story of The Dark Pictures:\u00a0Little Hope<\/em> follows four college students and their professor who\u00a0become stranded in the town of Little Hope, New England after their bus breaks down. Trapped in Little Hope by a mysterious fog, the group discovers a group of settlers that look exactly like them being executed, in a town with a long history of witch-hunting, and\u00a0will need to piece together the dark history of the town\u00a0if they ever want to escape.<\/p>\n

Supermassive Games has confirmed that witchcraft will serve as the main theme for\u00a0The Dark Pictures:\u00a0Little Hope<\/em><\/a> with films like The Witch, The Blair Witch Project<\/em> and It Follows all serving as inspiration for the story. The game’s story will also feature multiple timelines and players will move between the past and the present as they try to uncover the town’s secrets. Similar to previous games,\u00a0The Dark Pictures:\u00a0Little Hope<\/em> has a great cast including Will Poulter (The Maze Runner, Midsommar), Caitlyn Sponheimer (The Boys), and Alex Ivanovici (Assassin’s Creed II<\/em>, 300).<\/p>\n

The Dark Pictures:\u00a0Little Hope<\/em>\u00a0will be released worldwide on Friday, October 30 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and will be available on next-gen consoles through backward compatibility. There will be three editions of Little Hope<\/em>\u00a0available for purchase including the Standard Edition, the Dark Pictures Anthology Bundle which includes both games as well as collectible pins, a world map, and a steelbook case, and a third Little Hope Collectors Edition<\/a> (pictured above) which will be exclusive to Bandai Namco’s online store.<\/p>\n

Supermassive Games made a name for itself in 2015 with the release of Until Dawn<\/em>, an interactive survival-horror game featuring a star-studded cast and an exciting new take on the genre. In an effort to match the success of Until Dawn<\/em> and combat the length of AAA game developed, Supermassive announced the Dark Pictures Antholo<\/em>gy<\/a>, a series of eight smaller standalone horror games beginning with Man of Medan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In our Man of Medan<\/em> review<\/a>, we said: “The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan<\/em> is not quite as polished as Until Dawn<\/em>, but it’s still an effective horror gaming experience with a great story.” Hopefully, Little Hope<\/em> can improve upon its predecessor and set a new bar for quality gameplay and terrifying scares in this anthology horror series.<\/p>\n
