The months leading up to its release, however, has brought to light how Ubisoft has mistreated its female characters and employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter the Assassin\u2019s Creed Sisterhood, founded by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fan Kulpreet Virdi. The Sisterhood\u00a0is a safe space for women in gaming who are fans of the franchise and want to see things at Ubisoft improve in the future. In an interview with Game Rant, Virdi spoke about her experiences with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> games and what changes she hopes to see in the franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-sisterhood-explained\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Assassin\u2019s Creed Sisterhood Explained<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Assassins-Creed-Odyssey-Kassandra-Ikaros.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When speaking about the very first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/netflix-making-live-action-assassins-creed-series\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> game in the series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Virdi mentioned not enjoying the first installment in the series.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;it was so repetitive. I just thought, right, a master assassin can&#8217;t even swim!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s not alone in this opinion though, as many players, including Virdi, didn\u2019t find their footing and solid enjoyment in the franchise until <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The introduction of Italy and fan-favorite Ezio Auditore da Firenze set the sequel apart from the original game, so much so that Virdi said, \u201cit\u2019s one of my favorite games, I think ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding how far the games have come and improved since the first title, Virdi calls it a \u201cmassive jump\u201d\u2014one that\u2019s even clear when switching between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odyssey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Besides her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-sisterhood-speaks-origins-aya-cleopatra-alix-wilton-regan-zora-bishop\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playthrough of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origins<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she\u2019s also been playing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Flag<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on her Switch. She describes it as a \u201cgood port,\u201d but even playing those titles at the same time can really show how much the games have changed with each installment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for her favorite character, besides Ezio, Virdi adores <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syndicate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Evie Frye. She calls her \u201cthe woman assassin of dreams\u201d and enjoyed Evie\u2019s witty, funny personality and interactions with Jacob throughout the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/historically-accurate-video-games\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>The 10 Most Historically Accurate Video Games Ever Made, Ranked<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ac-origins-aya.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As much as the graphics and controls have improved in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> games, there\u2019s still a lot of work to be done as far as equality goes. It\u2019s recently come to light that female assassin protagonists have not been introduced in main franchise games because of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-origins-aya-ubisoft-sexism\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the belief that \u201cwomen don\u2019t sell,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a\u00a0clearly offensive and sexist notion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Virdi, there are a few ways Ubisoft can improve its treatment of female characters in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe. Releasing a game that introduces a female assassin as the protagonist, without the RPG choice introduced in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odyssey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, would be a great step in the right direction. Again, the Sisterhood doesn\u2019t want to replace male assassins with females, they just want an equal representation of both.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;it&#8217;s always been a choice, it&#8217;s never been like, we&#8217;ve never had a female version of Ezio. And it&#8217;s not until you kind of like, break down the facts and only in two of them the woman is a choice. Just a choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a female-centered assassin story would also provide unique storytelling that players haven\u2019t gotten to see so far <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-netflix-live-action-animation-anime\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Virdi points out that having the game centered on Aya could have led to an in-depth, incredibly interesting narrative of a mother mourning the loss of her child and becoming the Mother of the Creed. But that\u2019s not what players got.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I just really hope that one day they do commit to a woman and explore her character development, explore themes you maybe wouldn&#8217;t explore when you played as a male.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Ubisoft did decide to release a game with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-origins-aya-return-protagonist-rome\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aya as its protagonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Virdi says she\u2019d love to see Aya in Rome. Much of Aya and Cleopatra\u2019s work in Rome has only been disclosed in the companion comics and novels, which was \u201ca bit of a cop out\u201d as not everyone devotes time to items outside of the main games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s especially frustrating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-origins-aya-voice-actor-diminished-role\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to see Aya diminished<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in such a fashion because, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed 2,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there was a statue of Amunet\/Aya in the basement of the Monteriggioni Villa. She was the mother and founder of The Hidden Ones, which later became the Brotherhood and lead to the Creed, and yet players don\u2019t get to see her work. Aya\u2019s \u201cnarrative was quite choppy\u201d to Virdi, and now with everything that\u2019s come out, \u201cit probably explains quite a lot,\u201d including the disconnect she felt from Aya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise can improve in its treatment of female characters lies in their marketing campaigns. Even when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-syndicate-evie-sexism\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syndicate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was released, Evie Frye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got significantly less marketing than Jacob\u2014and for a game with dual protagonists, got significantly less playtime than her counterpart. Kassandra, who was originally supposed to be the only protagonist in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odyssey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was largely left out of the marketing for the game, and it seems Lady Eivor has unfortunately seen a similar trend. Even her reveal trailer was the same as the launch trailer for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valhalla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with little marketing since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To its credit, however, Virdi knows that the marketing for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valhalla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was \u201cprobably all sorted and done prior to the Sisterhood movement and months in advance,\u201d so hopefully Ubisoft improves its marketing for female characters come the next <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> release. However, this didn\u2019t stop devs from showing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-valhalla-adds-sisterhood-crest-tattoo\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support for the Sisterhood movement by adding its logo to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valhalla<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a tattoo for Eivor.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was hoping to see more of her throughout the marketing campaign, because I think that it was the same mistake they made with Odyssey where they didn&#8217;t showcase Kassandra as much as Alexios.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assassin\u2019s Creed Sisterhood hopes to be around for a long time. It has started to bring attention to the treatment of employees within Ubisoft and advocates for justice for female assassins and characters within the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe, but it also acts as a safe space for new or returning fans of the franchise. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to use the hashtag #ACSisterhood to keep the movement alive and help it grow even more than it already has.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Assassin\u2019s Creed Valhalla<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available for pre-order now and releases on November 10 for PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.
