Assassin’s Creed<\/strong><\/em> franchise developer Ubisoft revealed a ton of details today outlining cross-gen progression and upgrading. While the vast majority of games one would expect to see are backward compatible, there are some notable exceptions.<\/p>\n

As the release of\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Valhalla<\/em><\/a> approaches, Ubisoft is taking advantage of the new console’s strategies by making its back catalog of games accessible. Sony’s newest console will\u00a0support\u00a0nearly all PS4 games via backward compatibility<\/a>. Similarly, the Xbox Series will feature a large library of backward compatible titles at launch.\u00a0As a whole, the industry appears to be shifting toward blurrier lines between platforms.<\/p>\n

Ubisoft is no exception to the trend. In a news post, the developer and publisher went into detail regarding its plans for cross-generation compatibility. For the Xbox family, it says, all Ubisoft games for Xbox One will be backward compatible.\u00a0PlayStation is a different story, however.\u00a0Assassin’s Creed\u00a0<\/em>fans looking for the complete franchise experience on PS5 are out of luck.\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Syndicate\u00a0<\/em>and the entire\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Chronicles<\/em> spin-off trilogy are not backward compatible with the PS5. Ubisoft did not offer an explanation as to why these games are incompatible.<\/p>\n

While perhaps not the most beloved entry in the series,\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Syndicate<\/em> does have its proponents<\/a>. As a main series title, its absence is curious, especially considering its predecessor,\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Unity<\/em>, appears to be compatible. The entire franchise is available on current generation systems in one form or another, whether it be standalone titles or collections. Likely, there is some kind of technical issue holding up Syndicate<\/em> and the\u00a0Chronicles<\/em> games, but unless Ubisoft offers more clarity on the subject, fans will have to speculate.<\/p>\n

With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series launches on the horizon, several studios are taking steps to ease players’ transitions.\u00a0Earlier this week, Santa Monica Studio revealed that\u00a0God of War\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0God of War 3 Remastered<\/em> saves will be transferrable<\/a>\u00a0between generations. Under the Ubisoft umbrella, the just-released\u00a0Watch Dogs: Legion<\/em> will feature cross-gen progress<\/a>\u00a0and upgrades.<\/p>\n

Clearly, Microsoft and Sony have laid out a certain philosophy for this next generation, and developers are following suit. The\u00a0blurring of boundaries between platforms, including crossplay and cross-gen progression, is a boon to consumers. The fewer limitations placed on gamers with regards to playing with their friends, or maintaining their existing libraries, opens up more possibilities for collaboration between the industry titans.<\/p>\n
