The PS5 is set to release in less than two weeks, which means that a lot of important information about the PS5 is going to be shared in the run-up to launch. Case in point a recent article from Ubisoft<\/strong> detailing next-gen cross-progression, cross-play, and backward compatibility. To the surprise of many, Ubisoft<\/a> confirmed that a variety of its games will not be backward compatible on PS5, despite Sony’s recent reassurance that the vast majority of PS4 games will work on PS5.<\/p>\n

Ubisoft provides a list of just under 10 games that won’t work in PS5 via backward compatibility<\/a>, with the biggest game on the list being Assassin’s Creed Syndicate<\/em>, the follow-up to Rogue<\/em> and Unity<\/em> and the predecessor to Origins<\/em>. Other Assassin’s Creed<\/em> games on the list include the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack<\/em>, as well as\u00a0its individual Chronicles India<\/em>,\u00a0China<\/em>, and Russia<\/em> games. The rest of the list is made of up smaller releases, including Risk<\/em>, Star Trek Bridge Crew<\/em>, Werewolves Within<\/em>, and Space Junkies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

None of the games Ubisoft lists as incompatible on PS5 are major releases<\/a> and so it’s unlikely to cause too much of a controversy. Nevertheless, it’s surprising that there are any games that aren’t supported at all, especially from a publisher like Ubisoft. It also prompts the question as to whether other major publishers similarly have lists of games that won’t be backward compatible, but that haven’t been shared yet.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that in the same section of the article, Ubisoft states that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S<\/a> won’t have any similar problems. Ubisoft even goes so far as saying, “all our Xbox One games will be backward compatible.” Hopefully, Ubisoft<\/strong> will be able to patch or fix the remaining PS4 games that aren’t PS5 compatible so that both next-gen platforms will have universal support before too long.<\/p>\n
