Video game films are largely regulated to pure adaptations of existing games. Once in a while, though, you get films like <\/span>1UP<\/span><\/em>, which uses gaming as a backdrop to tell a more personable\u00a0story. The underdog comedy begins production this winter and centers on women in esports, and the sexism that often surround it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Per\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter,<\/a>\u00a0the upcoming film stars Paris Berelc (<\/span>Hubie Halloween<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> Alexa & Katie<\/span><\/span>) as Vivian Lee, an eSports player who quits her college team after enduring sexist behavior from her male teammates. At the risk of losing her scholarship, though, she\u2019s forced to assemble her own team led by an \u201cenigmatic coach\u201d played by Ellen Page (<\/span><\/span>The Umbrella Academy<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Juno<\/span><\/span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The film is the first production by BuzzFeed Studios and is directed by Kyle Newman (<\/span><\/span>Fanboys, Barely Lethal<\/span><\/span>). The fledgling studio aims to produce \u201csocially relevant and high-concept films\u201d aimed squarely at millennial and Gen Z audiences. 1UP<\/em>\u2019s script has been described as \u201cbeing in the vein of <\/span><\/span>Pitch Perfect <\/span><\/span>but set in the world of esports with a Gamergate backdrop\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Yes, 1UP<\/em> is an easy concept to groan at, but there\u2019s definitely a good idea in there somewhere. It\u2019d be genuinely cool to see a well-made film tackling the social minefield women players navigate in eSports while being humorous at the same time. Now, making a comedy that handles the decidedly not-funny Gamergate movement in a not-clumsy way…that I\u2019m less sure about. Time will tell (no release window is given for the film), but perhaps if BuzzFeed Studios\u00a0follows the examples set by a great video game movie \u2013 like, say, Mortal Kombat<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/span>1UP<\/span><\/span> could have a shot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n What do you think of <\/em><\/span>1UP<\/span><\/em>?
