There’s\u00a0only days left before season 7 arrives for Apex Legends<\/em><\/strong> and it looks to be one of the biggest updates the game has ever received. In addition to the new character Horizon, season 7 is also added community clubs, vehicles, and a new map called Olympus<\/a> that was originally a concept for Titanfall 3<\/em>. The design of the map clearly hints at this as well, featuring architecture and verticality that fans got used to seeing in the previous games. While Respawn continues to confirm that a new Titanfall<\/em> isn’t in the works, the studio apparently does have plans to evolve Apex Legends<\/em> beyond\u00a0being a\u00a0battle royale.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview, Apex Legends<\/em><\/a> creative director\u00a0Chad Grenier admitted that the studio continues to look ahead and has content planned through season 12. While that should make current players happy, the studio is also\u00a0looking at ways to expand the game and break it out of the typical battle royale genre. Naturally, new characters and platforms were mentioned but the studio is looking at more than just that.<\/p>\n

While nothing definitive was mentioned, Grenier admitted that there have been conversations at the studio as to how to take the game beyond its battle royale trappings. So far, the starting point as been through the unique Limited Time Modes, such as Fight or Fright being brought back for Halloween<\/a>, which offer players a different way to play the game. However, with a roster full of characters that fans have come to love, the studio is discussing other ways to use them.<\/p>\n

Nothing is set in stone but Grenier hints that players shouldn’t be surprised to see the game expand and evolve in the future, perhaps even getting an arena style mode<\/a> that has been continually hinted at by dataminers. The clues left in the game’s files indicate it may still be a long ways off, but could be a smaller sized map intended for squads mode. Either way, something like that would fit into the theme of Apex Legends<\/em>\u00a0eventually becoming more than a battle royale.<\/p>\n

Datamining has been a\u00a0sore spot at times for Apex Legends<\/em> and Respawn Entertainment as the two sides have seemingly been at odds fairly often. The studio has attempted to throw a monkey wrench into the works by creating a fake legend called Forge that was ultimately killed<\/a> by the true character for that season. Grenier acknowledges that leaked information does disappoint the studio, but on the other hand, stuff added to the game files is technically fair game and he’s happy that the game has a passionate following who wants to actively figure out what’s coming. In the end, it’s far better than the alternative, launching a game that is unable to cultivate a fanbase that cares.<\/p>\n

Apex Legends<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in the works.<\/p>\n
