The\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> series will have exciting reveals during 2021, according to franchise\u00a0creator Yuji Horii. Given that\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> has many sub-franchises, there are some exciting possibilities for what the reveals might be.<\/p>\n

Originally known in the West as\u00a0Dragon Warrior<\/em>, the\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> series is viewed as one of the most influential Japanese role-playing game series of all time.\u00a0The series is often compared to Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a>, but the two franchises are actually quite different. For example,\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em>\u00a0typically emphasizes simple turn-based combat systems, traditional fantasy tales set in medieval kingdoms, and the artistic stylings of Akira Toriyama.<\/p>\n

Speaking in a broadcast for the Japan-exclusive MMO\u00a0Dragon Quest 10<\/em>, Horii states that the series will be able to make “all sorts of announcements” for\u00a0its 35th anniversary in 2021, according to a translation from Gematsu. Although he promised continued support for\u00a0Dragon Quest 10<\/em>, Horii didn’t elaborate on what the future of the series will hold. As it stands, the only future mainline\u00a0series content confirmed for Western audiences is the upcoming multi-platform release of Dragon Quest 11 S<\/em><\/a>, an enhanced version of\u00a0Dragon Quest 11.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Of course, the first announcement that fans might expect is\u00a0a new mainline game. After all, Horii has confirmed that\u00a0Dragon Quest 12<\/em> is in development<\/a>. Alternately, popular sub-series such as\u00a0Dragon Quest Monsters<\/em> and\u00a0Dragon Quest Builders<\/em>\u00a0may be due\u00a0for new games in 2021. In particular, the\u00a0Monsters<\/em> sub-series has not received a new game since 2016’s Japan-exclusive\u00a0Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3<\/em>. It’s also possible that one of the series’ more obscure spin-offs, such as\u00a0Dragon Quest Swords<\/em> or\u00a0Dragon Quest Heroes<\/em>,\u00a0will make a return.<\/p>\n

Western fans\u00a0may have to\u00a0prepare themselves to receive less series content in 2021 as compared to Japanese fans. Although the series is decently well-known in the West, it is extremely\u00a0prominent in Japan. For example,\u00a0a highly popular Japan-only mobile game known as\u00a0Dragon Quest Walk<\/em> recently trended on global Twitter<\/a>. It is possible that many of the anniversary announcements will either concern Japan-only spinoffs or content updates for\u00a0Dragon Quest 10<\/em>. Given that\u00a0Dragon Quest 10<\/em> has not been localized in the eight years since its launch, it is unlikely it will be localized any time soon.<\/p>\n

To be fair, global fans can find all sorts of\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> content outside of\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> games. For example, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of<\/a> Dai<\/a><\/em>, an anime based on a\u00a0classic\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> manga,\u00a0is currently airing. Plus, the appearance of\u00a0Dragon Quest <\/em>protagonists\u00a0in\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em> has helped to raise the prominence of the\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/em> series in the West, making it more likely spin-offs will release globally in the future.<\/p>\n
