He made appearances as himself in the early-2010 family shows <em>Hannah Montana<\/em>;\u00a0<em>True Jackson, VP;\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Fred<\/em>. He has also had roles in acclaimed comedies like <em>Sisters<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Blockers.<\/em>\u00a0Most recently, it was announced that he will be a major cast member in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hbo-max-the-suicide-squad-spinoff-james-gunn-john-cena\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upcoming DC Extended Universe movie <strong><em>The Suicide Squad<\/em><\/strong><\/a> which is currently in post-production. There&#8217;s just no getting away from this guy, but that&#8217;s been the case for the past two decades.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-suicide-squad-cast-costumes-photo\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Suicide Squad Cast Gathers in Full Costume In New Set Photo<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The Suicide Squad<\/em> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/joel-kinnaman-the-suicide-squad-comedy\/\">James Gunn directed superhero movie<\/a> scheduled to premiere next fall. With a movie and television career spanning over 20 years, John Cena joined the cast to play Christopher Smith, better known as the Peacemaker, a violent vigilante who uses his strength and knowledge to promote world peace. He will also be playing this character in a prequel television series, scheduled to begin production in early 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesGunn\/status\/1320775782113837057\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewinding quite a bit, John Cena\u2019s first media appearance was in a 2000 wrestling comedy called <em>Ready to Rumble<\/em>. In this film, Cena had a small, uncredited background role as a random wrestler practicing in a gym. Then, he was a participant in a short-lived reality series titled <em>Manhunt<\/em> (2001) that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/john-oliver-conspiracy-theories\/\">faced a number of misfortunes<\/a> in its production including collapsing celebrity deals and rigged producers. Following these brief appearances came\u00a0a newfound wave of attention on his wrestling career as he began to get recognition at various championships. At this point, he released a Billboard-charting studio album, <em>You Can\u2019t See Me<\/em>, and was cast as the main character in the flopped 2006 action film <em>The Marine.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cena described this era of movies as one that he isn\u2019t pleased with. After <em>The Marine<\/em>, came three other movies in succession that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-worst-movies-of-the-2010s-according-to-one-critic\/\">were not met with critical approval<\/a>; <em>12 Rounds<\/em>, <em>Legendary<\/em>, and <em>The Reunion<\/em>. He took a break from acting for a few years before resurfacing in a few comedian-led movies, appearing in <em>Trainwreck<\/em> with Amy Schumer and <em>Sisters<\/em> with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. While being interviewed about his 2017 war movie <em>The Wall<\/em>, he expressed to Entertainment Weekly, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the kind of action I do like to do. I really wasn\u2019t proud of the stuff that I did beforehand, which was the stereotypical \u2014 it might as well have come in a white box that said &#8216;Movie&#8217; on the side. I think the performance dictates that. It wasn\u2019t as creatively stimulating as the stuff I\u2019m in now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Daddys-Home.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cena took some time to appear in a few animated movies <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wwe-star-paige-coronation-street\/\">with World Wrestling Entertainment<\/a>, voicing characters based on his own image in wrestler-themed cartoon specials like\u00a0<em>Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery<\/em>, The\u00a0<em>Flintstones &amp; WWE: Stone Age SmackDown!<\/em>, and <em>Surf\u2019s Up 2: WaveMania<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also made an appearance in the comedy <em>Daddy\u2019s Home<\/em> and its sequel, both led by Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. Cena played the muscular and intimidating father figure to a character\u2019s eventual step-daughter, and it quickly became one of his most memorable roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the last few years, the quality and reception of his projects have increased substantially. He played a lead in the hilarious and well-favored comedy\u00a0<em>Blockers<\/em>, a movie about a group of parents who embark on a quest to stop their\u00a0teenagers from having sex on prom night. It was produced by Universal Pictures and grossed a worldwide box office total of $94 million. And in the following year, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/four-prequels-better-predecessors\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cena played Jack Burns in <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/four-prequels-better-predecessors\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bumblebee<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>opposite of singer-actress <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hailee Steinfeld, in the movie based on the <em>Transformers<\/em> legacy. This movie had an all-star cast, adopting the voices of Angela Bassett, Justin Theroux<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Dylan O\u2019Brien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about now? Most recently, Cena has returned to more the family comedies, being seen in\u00a0<em>Playing With Fire<\/em> and Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s <em>Dolittle<\/em> adaptation.
