One of the more interesting tidbits of pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films is the widely-circulated rumor that Wesley Snipes acted like a bit of a jerk during the production of\u00a0Blade: Trinity<\/em><\/a>. While the\u00a0Blade\u00a0<\/em>series marked a strong moment for comic-book films and is fondly regarded today, Wesley Snipes is often thought of as having been a significant wrench in production for the third film, and partially responsible for its decline in quality. Now the movie star, in an interview with The Guardian, tells his side of the story, and it seems there’s a lot more gray area than once thought.<\/p>\n

The biggest name associated with these accusations is Patton Oswalt<\/a>, who once claimed that Snipes attempted to strangle director David Goyer, and refused to communicate to the production staff in any way other than using post-it notes. To put it mildly, Snipes was not impressed by these claims. He headed off the strangling claim\u00a0quickly:\u00a0\u201cLet me tell you one thing. If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn\u2019t be talking to me now. A black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snipes also had thoughts on Oswalt’s reliability as a source, arguing that there was no real evidence to suggest he had his facts straight. When the interviewer mentioned the post-it note claim, Snipes chuckled derisively, remarking, “Once again, Mr Oswalt is the authority. Hohoho! Why do people believe this guy\u2019s version of this story? Answer me that.”<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Snipes argued that the circulation of these claims against him, and their widespread acceptance, is part of an unfortunate undercurrent of racism in America and the popular culture. “This is part of the challenges that we as African Americans face here in America \u2013 these microaggressions. The presumption that one white guy can make a statement and that statement stands as true! Why would people believe his version is true? Because they are predisposed to believing the black guy is always the problem. And all it takes is one person, Mr. Oswalt, who I really don\u2019t know. I can barely remember him on the set, but it\u2019s fascinating that his statement alone was enough to make people go: \u2018Yeah, you know Snipes has got a problem.”<\/p>\n

While there is still no hard evidence to suggest which man is telling the full story, it does seem that the widely accepted narrative of Snipes’ behavior is not so cut and dry. Though Snipes has not had much in the way of projects lined up since being released from jail, at least he now has the chance to give his side of the many rumors\u00a0circulating around his legacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n
