Announcing that the team\u00a0has vastly\u00a0updated the Creation Engine, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/todd-howard-starfield-elder-scrolls-6-interview\/\">facilitating\u00a0a bigger jump in hardware than that between\u00a0<em>Morrowind\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/todd-howard-starfield-elder-scrolls-6-interview\/\">Oblivion<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and created the largest map in the studio&#8217;s history for\u00a0<em>Starfield,\u00a0<\/em>it seems both games are going to\u00a0be huge for the popular developer.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside these two huge announcements, Todd Howard has also\u00a0revealed\u00a0that both games will feature an innovative creation tool Bethesda Game Studios has\u00a0tinkered with in the past. Talking to\u00a0GamesIndustry.biz&#8217;s James Batchelor in an interview for\u00a0Develop: Brighton Digital 2020, the influential video game director revealed that procedural generation will return for both\u00a0<em>Starfield\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-elder-scrolls-6\/\">The Elder Scrolls 6<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-6-todd-howard-xbox-exclusive\/\">The Elder Scrolls 6: Todd Howard Talks About Possible Xbox Exclusivity<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to spend our time handcrafting the things that you can tell are handcrafted&#8221; Howard claims when discussing the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/starfield-elder-scrolls-6-procedurally-generated-map\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">procedural generation<\/a> during the interview. However, he does claim that procedural generation has imperative uses in other aspects, claiming that\u00a0it will be used by the company in future projects. &#8220;If we can use procedural systems to generate content that keeps the game everlasting, then that&#8217;s what we want to lean on,&#8221;\u00a0Howard states, claiming\u00a0that while the studio has strayed away from procedural generation in recent years,\u00a0&#8220;the stuff we&#8217;re doing now, we&#8217;re pushing procedural generation further than we have in a very long time.&#8221; The discussion begins at 8:40 in the interview below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I9GA8lsH8ls?start=3258&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s unclear exactly what type of procedural generation\u00a0Howard is explicitly referring to, it seems unlikely that&#8217;s he&#8217;s talking about\u00a0the generation\u00a0of full maps utilized by games like\u00a0<em>Minecraft, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/no-mans-sky-halloween-update-spooky-aliens\/\">No Man&#8217;s Sky<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>or <i>Spelunky<\/i>. In the past, the company has dabbled in using procedural generation as a creation tool, building exterior environments with the use of a computer\u00a0and then going over\u00a0them to ensure they uphold the standards of the studio.\u00a0<em>Oblivion\u00a0<\/em>utilized the feature frequently in the large open space between its landmarks, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Howard could also be referencing the procedural generation of other content as well, with\u00a0<em>Skyrim\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Fallout 4\u00a0<\/em>incorporating the system into its quest design. In both games, NPCs would generate quests at random, which usually tasked players with eliminating spawned enemies or defending certain settlements.
