But since the release of the trailer n October people were quick to draw comparisons between the movie and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/minecraft-avatar-the-last-airbender-intro-stop-motion\/\"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/em><\/a> series.<\/p>\n<p><em>Raya and the Last Dragon<\/em>,\u00a0due out in March of 2021,<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0features<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/search\/star%20wars\/\"><em> Star Wars<\/em><\/a> actress <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/kelly-marie-tran-podcast-thriller-passenger-list-crime-fiction\/\">Kelly Marie Tran<\/a> as the titular character.\u00a0The film takes place in Kumandra, a fantasy world, where the\u00a0warrior Raya must find the last remaining dragon to save her kingdom. Upon the trailer&#8217;s debut,\u00a0fans immediately took to social media and pointed out the many similarities between it\u00a0and <em>Avatar<\/em>. These posts mostly compare\u00a0young Raya and Korra, older Raya and Katara as the painted lady, and the mysterious masked man and the Blue Spirit.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-of-tsushima-legends-uncle-iroh-greg-baldwin\/\">Ghost of Tsushima Multiplayer Mode Narrated By Uncle Iroh Voice Actor<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/avaatua\/status\/1319520323503591425?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KB_Dean\/status\/1319620966700507136?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/starlightkween\/status\/1319116307363672064?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many fans point out the similarities out of a place of excitement and proclaim their eagerness to see <em>Raya and the Last Dragon.<\/em> However,\u00a0others claim that the movie is a direct ripoff of the <em>Avatar<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MCFreitas07\/status\/1319201511872757760?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShoutMyName_Now\/status\/1319279777270775809?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dehydrogenation\/status\/1318969233074696192?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While fans may mean no offense in drawing these comparisons,\u00a0they actually do more harm than good; yes, the movie and the show are similar because they are based off of the same cultures.\u00a0One is not a ripoff. They are not the same exact stories. Another instance of this phenomenon happening was when fans compared <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/movies-if-you-like-book-of-life\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Book of Life<\/em><\/a> to Disney&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/coco-vs-nightmare-before-christmas-best-disney-autumn-movie\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coco<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>back in 2017. Fans claimed the two movies were too similar, and the fact that Disney tried to trademark the phrase &#8220;D\u00eda de los Muertos&#8221; during the time didn&#8217;t exactly help the company&#8217;s case. Both movies feature a boy with a guitar who feels estranged by his family and seeks the help of his ancestors to return to the land of the living. They&#8217;re the exact same story, right? No, they just share some plot elements and are lovingly based on Mexican culture.<\/p>\n<p>Picture this: a brave warrior must travel the land and fight monsters to help a princess. This could be <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-zelda-breath-wild-2-time-jump-map\/\">The Legend of Zelda<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-witcher-3-ladies-of-crookback-bog-dark-fantasy-best-quest\/\">The Witcher<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/princess-bride-board-game-co-op-target\/\">The Princess Bride<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-bros-35-no-tutorial\/\">Super Mario Bros.<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-leak-shrek-screenshot\/\">Shrek<\/a>,<\/em> and about half of the animated Disney princess movies, just to name a few. However everyone can agree that\u00a0these stories are their own entities.\u00a0Most of these movies, shows, video games, and books draw heavy inspiration from European cultures,\u00a0but there is hardly controversy of whether one story is a ripoff of the other. On the other hand, the clash between Disney and <em>Avatar<\/em> fans brings to light how there is very little good representation of Southeast Asian cultures in Western media. <em>Avatar<\/em> was revolutionary in bringing a show that featured a variety of cultures, including that of the Inuits, to audiences, however it did not create these ideas. The concept of a brown girl with dark hair and blue clothing was not invented by <em>Avatar<\/em>, just like how the concept of elves, kingdoms, and magic spells\u00a0was not invented by <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/lord-of-the-rings-games-in-middle-earth-worth-playing\/\"><em>Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important that there isn&#8217;t just one movie about\u00a0D\u00eda de los Muertos or just one show that features Southeast Asian cultures. More than one is allowed to exist. To\u00a0put the first culturally significant project on a pedestal and brush off anything else that takes inspiration from the same source inhibits diverse storytelling.
