Cards that originally cost mere dollars to pick up are now worth tens, or in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars. The record for the most expensive card ever sold has been broken numerous times over the last four years alone and has more than tripled during that time. It&#8217;s gotten to the point where many of these cards are worth more than most peoples&#8217; homes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/most-expensive-yu-gi-oh-cards-price-value\/\">The 10 Most Expensive Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards (&amp; How Much They\u2019re Going For)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What makes this all so staggering is that a lot of the rarest cards today were once fairly common and were owned by children all over the world. Perhaps had they known then what we know now, they might just have taken better care of them rather than shoving them in their pockets and, heaven forbid, actually using them to play the Pok\u00e9mon Trading Card game. Readers would be wise to go and check their attics after finishing this list, as they might just be sitting on a goldmine.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Updated January 14th, 2021 by Thomas Bowen:<\/strong>\u00a0With the price of Pok\u00e9mon cards continuing to rise, more and more people are digging through their old collections in the hopes of striking gold. Getting one&#8217;s hands on a high value\u00a0card is only half the battle though.\u00a0Due to the age of some of these rare cards, many have picked up damage over the years meaning that those wishing to\u00a0maximize their profit\u00a0will need to get their cards professionally graded to determine their condition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are numerous companies that provide this service including SGC and Becket, but the largest and most commonly used is PSA. Following a thorough inspection, the company&#8217;s team of graders will assign cards a rating out of 10\u00a0with the coveted GEM-MT 10 rating given only to cards that are in mint condition. Unsurprisingly,\u00a0perhaps, it&#8217;s these cards that typically sell for the highest prices.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>World Championship Master&#8217;s Key ($21,201)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-masters-key.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>A copy of the Master&#8217;s Key <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwccmarketplace.com\/items\/2132124\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold for more than $20,000 in November 2019<\/a>.\u00a0Unlike most cards sold at auction, this one wasn&#8217;t graded by PSA and was instead sold in the trophy case in which it was presented. Whether or not a graded copy of the card would have fetched more remains to be seen, but, given the value, it&#8217;s perhaps understandable why the seller wasn&#8217;t too keen to\u00a0crack open the trophy case and send\u00a0the card\u00a0off to PSA.<\/p>\n<p>Master&#8217;s Key\u00a0was originally handed out to contestants at the 2010 Pok\u00e9mon World Championships. The event took place in Hawaii and was contested by just 36 players. As a result, the card is incredibly rare, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/pop\/tcg-cards\/2010\/pokemon-japanese-promo\/98069\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only nine GEM-MT 10 copies<\/a> in existence.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Master&#8217;s Scroll ($30,100)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-masters-scroll-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In late 2020, a\u00a0GEM-MT 10 copy of the Japanese Master&#8217;s Scroll card <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/184476561462\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold on eBay for more than $30,000<\/a>. It&#8217;s a card that was never available in packs\u00a0nor was it ever made available outside of\u00a0Japan.\u00a0The only way to obtain it was through\u00a0the Pokemon Daisuki Club in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/struggles-new-pokemon-players-will-never-know\/\">10 Struggles New Pok\u00e9mon Players Will Never Know<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Pok\u00e9mon Daisuki Club is the official Japanese Pok\u00e9mon fan club and regularly offers limited edition cards. Members are able to accrue Action Points by completing certain tasks and can then trade them in for such cards. It&#8217;s unknown exactly how many members were able to accrue the 8,600 points needed to obtain the Master&#8217;s Scroll card, but there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/pop\/tcg-cards\/2010\/pokemon-japanese-promo\/98069\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 26\u00a0GEM-MT 10 copies in existence<\/a>, making it incredibly rare.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>University Magikarp ($50,100)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-university-magikarp.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide4.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>University Magikarp doesn&#8217;t come up for sale too often, but when it does, it usually fetches a fairly high price. The average price for the card over recent years has been around $17,000, but the most recent sale was for considerably more. A GEM-MT 10 copy of the card was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/1998-Pokemon-Japanese-Promo-Tamamushi-University-Prize-Magikarp-129-PSA-10-GEM\/143792832259?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160323102634%26meid%3D8545f8dd59b341718a90814f9cd54981%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D143792850728%26itm%3D143792832259%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DDefaultOrganic&amp;_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold on eBay at the end of October 2020<\/a>\u00a0for a staggering $50,100.<\/p>\n<p>The card\u00a0was handed out as a prize following a competition held by\u00a0Tamamushi University. Participants took a series of tests and those who passed were invited to a special tournament in Osaka. Following the completion of the tournament, winners were given a copy of University Magikarp. According to a magazine advertisement promoting the competition, 1,000 copies of the card were printed, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/cardfacts\/non-sports-cards\/1998-nintendo-pokemon-japanese-promo\/university-magikarp-tamamushi-univ-prize-129\/640815\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 68 have been graded by PSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Tropical Mega Battle &#8211; No. 2 Trainer ($60,000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-no2-trainer.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide5.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Showing one of these special trainer cards is supposed to allow players special treatment at official Pok\u00e9mon events, but it&#8217;s unlikely that this is the reason that they&#8217;re so highly sought after. A PSA Authentic copy of the card sold for $60,000\u00a0in 2019 on eBay. This might seem like a lot, but it&#8217;s likely only a fraction of what a GEM-MT 10 copy of the card would sell for.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-every-region-hasnt-appeared-main-series-game-far\/\">Pok\u00e9mon: Every Region That Hasn&#8217;t Appeared In A Main Series Game So Far<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trainer No.2\u00a0was one of eight limited edition cards given to attendees of the Tropical Mega Battle, an annual event that took place\u00a0at\u00a0the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu between 1999 and 2001.\u00a0There are only\u00a05\u00a0copies of the card\u00a0registered with PSA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/pop\/tcg-cards\/1999\/pokemon-japanese-promo-tropical-mega-battle\/87370\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only two of those are in mint condition<\/a> making this one of the rarest cards ever printed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Tropical Mega Battle &#8211; Tropical Wind ($65,100)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-tropical-wind.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide6.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>A mint condition copy of\u00a0Tropical Wind\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/143792850728\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold on eBay in October 2020<\/a>\u00a0for an eye-watering $65,100. What&#8217;s more astonishing is that Tropical Wind is by far the most common of the Tropical Mega Battle set. Due to how rare mint condition copies of some of the other cards are though, they\u00a0hardly ever go up for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Wind\u00a0is another one of the eight cards handed out at the Tropical Mega Battle event. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/pop\/tcg-cards\/1999\/pokemon-japanese-promo-tropical-mega-battle\/87370\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only two\u00a0GEM-MT 10 copies of the card<\/a> in existence, with most of the cards appraised by PSA being rated 8 or 9. That said, even these are worth a pretty penny.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>No.1 Trainer ($90,000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-no1-trainer.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide7.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Considered by some to be the rarest Pok\u00e9mon card in existence, a copy of the No.1 Trainer card <a href=\"https:\/\/comics.ha.com\/itm\/memorabilia\/pokemon-super-secret-battle-no-1-trainer-trainer-promo-hologram-trading-card-1999-psa-gem-mt-10\/a\/7231-92152.s\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold at auction for $90,000<\/a> in July of 2020.\u00a0Given its supposed rarity, it&#8217;s perhaps a little surprising that it didn&#8217;t sell for more, but $90,000 is still a decent return for a card that was given out for free.<\/p>\n<p>The card was awarded\u00a0to each of the seven regional champions at\u00a0the 1999 Pok\u00e9mon World Championships in Tokyo with an additional card somehow making its way into circulation. It features artwork from\u00a0Hideki Kazama and is part of the secret super battle promo set.\u00a0Of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/pop\/tcg-cards\/1999\/pokemon-japanese-promo-secret-super-battle\/167711\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eight copies of the card to have been graded by PSA<\/a>, only six have achieved the perfect\u00a0GEM-MT 10 rating.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>1st Edition\u00a0Neo Genesis Lugia ($129,000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/lugia-card.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/lugia-pop.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s rare for a card released in the West to sell for crazy money unless they happen to be part of the base set. For that reason, the original owner of this 1st edition Lugia card was probably a little surprised when\u00a0it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/2000-Pokemon-Neo-Genesis-1st-Edition-Holo-Lugia-9-PSA-10-GEM-MINT-\/402557611172?nma=true&amp;si=GpWSCZlfc1o%252Fg67GAm0VYB%252FBmoc%253D&amp;orig_cvip=true&amp;nordt=true&amp;rt=nc&amp;_trksid=p2047675.l2557\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold by PWCC Auctions for nearly $130,000<\/a> in November of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>As with most high value cards, it had received a GEM-MT 10 rating from PSA\u00a0making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/cardfacts\/non-sports-cards\/2000-nintendo-pokemon-neo-genesis-1st-edition\/lugia-holo-9\/656718\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of only\u00a041 copies of the card to have done so<\/a>. Whether or not this sale will lead to other Neo Genesis cards skyrocketing in value remains to be seen, but &#8211; prior to this &#8211; the average sale price of\u00a0a 1st Edition Neo Genesis Lugia had been <em>just<\/em> $70,000.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Family Event Kangaskhan ($150,100)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-kangaskhan.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide8.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Just four years ago, the Family Event Kangaskhan card was selling for around $10,000. In October 2020 however, a PSA GEM-MT 10 copy sold for more than\u00a015 times that amount. The card was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/1998-Pokemon-Japanese-Promo-Family-Event-Trophy-Card-Holo-Kangaskhan-115-PSA-10\/353241758513\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold by PWCC Auctions through eBay<\/a> with the final bid standing at a mammoth $150,100.<\/p>\n<p>The card itself was given out in Japan following a parent and child Pok\u00e9mon tournament held in 1998. Families battled other families with the parent and child teams who racked-up the most wins being awarded the Kangaskhan promo card. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/cardfacts\/non-sports-cards\/1998-nintendo-pokemon-japanese-promo\/kangaskhan-holo-family-event-trophy-card-115\/640814\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 11\u00a0GEM-MT 10 copies of the card<\/a> in circulation, with a combined value of\u00a0over one and a half million dollars.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Pikachu Illustrator ($233,000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pok-pikachu-illustrator.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide9f.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Pikachu Illustrator card has held the record for the most expensive Pok\u00e9mon card ever sold on several\u00a0occasions in the past but currently sits in second spot. A copy of the card was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.nine.com.au\/business-news\/rare-pokemon-card-sells-for-record-74000-at-auction\/ddc174e8-48fe-41cf-942a-902267d6c698\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold\u00a0at auction for $74,000<\/a> in late 2016 and another was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invaluable.com\/auction-lot\/pokemon-pikachu-illustrator-promo-card-psa-9-mint-6dd4070ab8#\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold for $190,000<\/a>\u00a0just a few years later. The most recent copy and former record holder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zenmarket.jp\/blog\/post\/9335\/pokemon-illustrator-record-sale\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold for a staggering\u00a0\u00a525m<\/a> through Japanese marketplace ZenPlus in July 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The card itself was handed out to the winners of an illustration contest held by the Japanese monthly manga\u00a0CoroCoro Comics in 1998. Just 39 copies of the card were ever printed and only 12 of those are known to be in\u00a0good condition. Interestingly, all three of the aforementioned copies were rated 9 by PSA, so if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/cardfacts\/non-sports-cards\/1998-nintendo-pokemon-japanese-promo\/pikachu-holo-illustrator\/640820\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the only existing GEM-MT 10 copy<\/a>\u00a0ever goes to auction, it would likely fetch an astronomical amount and help the Pikachu Illustrator card to reclaim the top spot.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>1st Edition Shadowless Charizard ($360,000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pok-charizard-new.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Slide10.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul made headlines in October 2020 when he <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/logan-paul-pokemon-card-charizard-pawn-stars\/\">spent $150,000<\/a> on a 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard card. Perhaps surprisingly though, this is not the most expensive copy of the card ever sold. It&#8217;s not even close, in fact.\u00a0The current record holder comes courtesy of Goldin Auctions, who <a href=\"https:\/\/goldinauctions.com\/1999_pokemon_base_1st_edition__4_charizard__hologr-lot71096.aspx\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold a copy of the card for a staggering $360,000<\/a> just a few months later. Unlike most high value Pokemon cards though, this one was graded by SGC rather than PSA and received their elusive\u00a0GOLD LABEL PRISTINE 10 rating.<\/p>\n<p>SGC don&#8217;t provide public information regarding card populations, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psacard.com\/cardfacts\/non-sports-cards\/1999-nintendo-pokemon-game\/charizard-holo-shadowless-4\/605254\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the PSA website<\/a>, there are just 54 GEM-MT 10 copies of the card in existence, which goes some way to explaining their value.
