The new PlayStation 5<\/strong> is about a week away from releasing alongside with the DualSense controller. As such, there have been\u00a0plenty of\u00a0PS5 accessories\u00a0unboxed<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0various critics and online game reviewers to show off the console before launch. During this process, it has also come to light that Sony is using recyclable packaging materials for the next-generation console.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0PS5<\/a>‘s\u00a0packaging material has been getting more attention due to how eco-friendly it is. Notably,\u00a0Sony is\u00a0switching from using plastic and Styrofoam to recyclable cardboard. Even the DualSense controller is\u00a0getting the cardboard packaging treatment too.\u00a0The packaging for the PS5 is reportedly well organized, but is far from “glamorous” as some might expect.<\/p>\n

The PS5 comes in a more minimally designed box that prioritizes function over form. First, there’s the PS5 retail box<\/a> people may be familiar with, and inside is a\u00a0secondary cardboard box. This second box\u00a0has an accessible flap which opens up to a long cardboard box holding the console’s cables, controller and instruction manuals. Underneath it is\u00a0the PS5 itself, wrapped in anti-static plastic material and held securely between two bumpers resembling egg cartons.<\/p>\n

The simple\u00a0package design and use of cardboard materials\u00a0lets players easily unbox the console and its accessories. The changed design and use of recyclable materials reflects\u00a0Sony’s attempts\u00a0to be more eco-friendly going forward. PlayStation joined the “Playing For\u00a0The Planet” initiative<\/a> last September, an effort by\u00a0the United Nations to work with the gaming industry in its efforts towards reducing its carbon footprint.\u00a0The membership\u00a0includes companies such as Microsoft, Stadia, and Unity.<\/p>\n

As such,\u00a0the company has been steadily making some changes to help integrate more environmentally friendly methods. One of which includes the reduction of plastic in\u00a0upcoming PlayStation\u00a0products<\/a>.\u00a0This goes double\u00a0for the cardboard material\u00a0used for securing\u00a0the\u00a0console’s accessories as well as the bumpers that\u00a0hold the PS5.<\/p>\n

The recyclable packaging material certainly makes it easier for customers to dispose of their boxes after opening them, and is one of several changes the company is attempting to implement. Last year, Sony claimed\u00a0the PS5 rest mode<\/a>\u00a0would be more\u00a0energy efficient than the PS4. Customers will be able to see for themselves\u00a0if the console can deliver on that promise\u00a0when it releases soon. Whether or not the company can meet all its eco-friendly goals,\u00a0the PS5’s recyclable packaging is a good start.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation 5<\/strong> launches\u00a0on November 12.<\/p>\n
