As Madeline climbs the mountain, she encounters a range of obstacles holding her back, including a shadow version of herself that embodies her negative emotions.\u00a0As Madeline and the player overcome\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/celeste-free-dlc-hard-levels\/\"><em>Celeste&#8217;s<\/em> demanding platforming challenges<\/a>, Madeline grows more at ease with herself, and confident in her ability to accomplish whatever she sets her mind to.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/faze-ewok-trans\/\">Pro Streamer FaZe Ewok Comes Out as Trans<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Director Maddy Thorson, who uses they\/them pronouns, confirmed that Madeline was trans while noting that they are trans, as well. Thorson did not identify as trans during the development of\u00a0<em>Celeste<\/em>, and their process of self-discovery mirrors that of Madeline herself. The most explicit reference to this aspect of Madeline&#8217;s identity comes during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/celestes-chapter-9-farewell-dlc-revealed\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Celeste&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0brutally difficult <em>Farewell<\/em> content update<\/a>, when Madeline can be seen to have the trans pride flag on her desk during a cutscene.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaddyThorson\/status\/1324579049256136704\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thorson also acknowledges that Madeline&#8217;s trans identity is never brought up within the game&#8217;s narrative, and that this could be a potential source of criticism. In particular, Thorson acknowledges the similarity to\u00a0<em>Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>author\u00a0J.K. Rowling retroactively declaring <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/harry-potter-hogwarts-legacy-dumbledore\/\">the beloved\u00a0wizard\u00a0Albus Dumbledore<\/a> to be gay.\u00a0However, this is partially explained by Thorson&#8217;s gradual self-realization, and also by Thorson&#8217;s belief that Madeline should be afforded some degree of privacy. Given how realistically\u00a0<em>Celeste<\/em> treats the topics of depression and anxiety, it only makes sense that it would treat Madeline&#8217;s privacy in a realistic fashion as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tell-me-why-last-us-2-trans-character-representation\/\">Trans representation in gaming<\/a> has recently taken\u00a0some strides through games like\u00a0<em>The Last of Us Part II\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Tell Me Why<\/em>.\u00a0Still, representation across a range of genres is essential, and\u00a0<em>Celeste<\/em>\u00a0may be one of the first platformers to feature a trans protagonist. Given its themes of perseverance and self-discovery, <em>Celeste<\/em>\u00a0can serve as an especially powerful metaphor for body dysmorphia and the importance of living as one&#8217;s most authentic self. This does not take away from the game&#8217;s explicit discussions of mental health and grief, but rather helps to contextualize them in a new way.<\/p>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0<em>Celeste<\/em> is not the first non-cisgender protagonist of a blockbuster indie game. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/deltarune-chapter-2-screenshots\/\">highly-anticipated episodic release <em>Deltarune<\/em><\/a>\u00a0features protagonist Kris, whose gender is never specified.
