Google Stadia<\/strong>‘s launch has been divisive, to say the least. As innovative as Google Stadia<\/a>‘s cloud gaming subscription service is, some of the service’s interested base hasn’t had its expectations met yet. Part of that is the slow rollout of Stadia features, which Stadia is correcting over time. Google is now rolling out the latest example, confirming\u00a0recently that it is introducing family sharing via Stadia.\u00a0Stadia users will be able to share games via a Google\u00a0family group.<\/p>\n

The process starts with one of Google’s family groups. These groups aren’t unique to stadia, but rather have been used for some time on Android to share games via Google Play<\/a>. Families can add other members of their family to a group, share games, and even allow other family members to make purchases via a shared family payment method. Google Stadia’s family groups will work exactly the same, with a similar structure and feature set. All that’s required to set one up is that each family member has their own Stadia account.<\/p>\n

One other big question that some Stadia users may have is whether or not a subscription to Stadia Pro<\/a> is required to share games. According to Google’s FAQ, this is not the case. An active Stadia Pro subscription is not required to share games or to play shared games. There are some Stadia games that require having an active Stadia Pro subscription, however. These games will stop being shared if the subscription ends.<\/p>\n

As with any digital family group service<\/a>, the group will have a family group manager that can control a variety of functions within the group. Families often include children of all ages, so precautions are built-in so that certain games can’t be played and purchases can’t be made from certain accounts.<\/p>\n

Family groups for Stadia may not be a big enough feature to draw any more attention to the service. However, it’s a feature that’s very important to at least a small portion of the potential Stadia audience<\/a>. These types of smaller features are important in the long run, as every addition makes the overall platform that much more attractive.<\/p>\n

Despite the criticism, Google continues to grow Stadia month by month. Free games continue to be released for Stadia Pro subscribers each month, a large swathe of Ubisoft games<\/a> including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla<\/em> and Far Cry 6<\/em> are confirmed for the platform, and other small features have been added. Stadia<\/strong> continues to become a better service.<\/p>\n
