Fire Emblem: Three Houses\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is now the best-selling game in the entire\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em> series, according to Nintendo’s latest sales data. The\u00a0data reflects how the series has grown from a niche franchise to one of Nintendo’s flagship intellectual properties.<\/p>\n

Fire Emblem: Three Houses<\/em><\/a> breaks new ground for the\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em> series by centering\u00a0its story around a military academy. Players must recruit, train, and socialize with students before taking them into battle at the end of each month, as a civil war\u00a0begins to tear apart the country of Fodlan. The game features multiple story routes, based on which of the eponymous houses the player chooses at the start of the game. The game’s DLC expansion also added a secret fourth house\u00a0hidden deep underground<\/a>, expanding on the game’s lore further.<\/p>\n

Nintendo revealed that\u00a0Fire Emblem: Three Houses<\/em> has sold over\u00a0three million copies worldwide since its debut in the summer of 2019. This makes it the best-selling game in the series, surpassing prior successes like\u00a0Fire Emblem Fates<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Fire Emblem Awakening<\/em>. While the sales of\u00a0Three Houses<\/em>\u00a0pale in comparison to those of\u00a0games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>, which has sold almost 30 million units, it is an impressive achievement for the franchise.<\/p>\n

One possible reason why the game\u00a0has sold so well is the quality of its writing. The game’s main setting, Garreg Mach Monastery, is full of interesting and likeable characters. Although fans like some Three Houses<\/em> characters more than others<\/a>, they all contribute to a complex and compelling story. Part\u00a0two of the game, which varies substantially depending on the player’s earlier decisions, uses this world-building to make every skirmish between former friends seem\u00a0more intense. In turn, this adds replay value, as players\u00a0can make different choices.<\/p>\n

Another factor in the game’s success may be that it included all of its main content in one release. Fire Emblem Fates<\/em>\u00a0required a separate purchase for each of that game’s three routes, and each of the playable routes in\u00a0Three Houses<\/em>\u00a0requires roughly equal skill\u00a0whereas\u00a0Fates<\/em> made some routes harder – notably the grim Conquest<\/em> campaign<\/a>. Since\u00a0Three Houses\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t necessarily use difficulty as a way to distinguish between routes, it means anyone can choose the house they like most.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Three Houses<\/em>, fans seem to be hungry for whatever the\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em> series holds for the future. Nintendo will be localizing the original\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em> game for the first time in December, and collector’s editions of the re-release are already selling for enormous prices on eBay<\/a>. Whatever form it takes, the future of the\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em> series looks to be\u00a0bright.<\/p>\n
