The list of wholesome television\u00a0husbands is a short one and its almost non existent when it comes to entertainment outside of North America. Lament this egregious shortage no longer for The Way of the Househusband<\/em> is getting a live-action spin-off called\u00a0<\/span>3-nen Tatsu-gumi: Gokushufu-sensei<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Fandom for The Way of the Househusband<\/em><\/a> outside of Japan is small, but its building into a popular franchise with the story coming to nearly every medium. It started with <\/span>Kousuke Oono’s award-winning manga before a live-action version made its debut in Japan in 2020. Then came the<\/span> Netflix announcement that The Way of the Househusband<\/em> would finally get an anime adaptation in 2021 that will be coming to both Japan and North America. Finally, there’s the spinoff series which is set to debut November 8 on Hulu Japan.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During a time when culture is more sensitive than ever about depictions of gender, specifically of masculinity and what it means to be a man,\u00a0<\/span>The Way of The Househusband<\/span><\/i> deals with both in a way that is both humorous and respectful. The story follows retired yakuza member<\/a> Tatsu (aka “Immortal Tatsu”) who is living out the rest of his days as a househusband. Done with with a life of crime and violence, the remaining drama he deals with takes place in the grocery store and caring for his anime-loving wife Miku.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While both the live-action version<\/a> and anime follow the plot closely, the <\/span>3-nen Tatsu-gumi: Gokushufu-sensei <\/span><\/i>spin-off changes the premise slightly. Instead of following Tatsu\u2019s daily exploits at home, it puts him in charge of a home economics class after the teacher goes on maternity leave. The spin-off series will run six episodes and there is no word yet whether it will be coming to North America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The live-action version of The Way of the Househusband<\/em>\u00a0stars Hiroshi Tamaki as\u00a0 Tatsu and he will reprise that role in the spin-off television show. Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda<\/a> also returns as narrator for the show. He is slated to voice Tatsu<\/a> in the upcoming Netflix anime adaptation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no telling whether The Way of the Househusband<\/em> will catch on west of Japan, but the fact that it is getting so many different adaptations is a win for good husbands everywhere.<\/p>\n
