Between systems like the SNES, the Nintendo 64, and the original playstation, some of most beloved games of all time were released throughout the &#8217;90s. Whether one was a fan of fighting games, racing games, RPGs, or platformers, it was a defining era for many genres of games.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-retro-timely-advanced\/\">10 Retro &#8217;90s Games Way Ahead Of Their Time<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, while there are many series that flourished in the &#8217;90s that still receive many new entries to this day, there other others that haven&#8217;t been as lucky, falling into obscurity with the passing of time. To today, we&#8217;re going to examine ten under-appreciated cult classics from the &#8217;90s that are overdue for a continuation or reboot!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Shining Force<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/shining-force.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Originally released for the Sega Genesis, the\u00a0<em>Shining Force\u00a0<\/em>series is one that has many similarities to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fire-emblem-three-houses-game-recommendations\/\">the\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a>, but was released outside of japan nearly a decade before\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem.\u00a0<\/em>While the first entry was released in 1992, the series hasn&#8217;t seen a new game since\u00a0the Japan exclusive release of\u00a0<em>Shining Force III\u00a0<\/em>in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>While much of the series gameplay is reminiscent of other <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fire-emblem-final-fantasy-rpg-tactics\/\">Japanese tactical RPGs<\/a>, the game has a distinct tone, and uniquely features an overworld and towns akin to what one would find in a SNES-era\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Fatal Fury<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/fatal-fury.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the initial flagship fighting game franchises of developer, SNK,\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Fatal Fury\u00a0<\/em>series is the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-who-terry-bogard\/\">beloved fighting game icon, Terry Bogard<\/a>. Following the release of\u00a0<em>Garou: Mark of the Wolves<\/em> in 1999, the series was discontinued, essentially being absorbed into the\u00a0<em>King of Fighters\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-90s-best\/\">The 10 Best &#8217;90s Video Games Of All Time, Ranked<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite this, it feels as though much has been lost, as these two fighting game franchises possess quite distinct gameplay differences. As Terry&#8217;s inclusion in\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate\u00a0<\/em>has made him more well known to those unfamiliar with\u00a0<em>Fatal Fury,\u00a0<\/em>now is as good a time as any for a\u00a0<em>Fatal Fury\u00a0<\/em>reboot.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>PaRappa The Rapper<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/parappa-the-rapper-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Originally released for the Playstation in 1996, <em>PaRappa the Rapper\u00a0<\/em>has a very special place in the hearts of many players. Through it&#8217;s combination of unique visual style and memorable music,\u00a0<em>PaRappa the Rapper\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most definitive rhythm games of the 1990s. Though the game has been ported to numerous consoles such as the PSP and most recently the Playstation 4, the series hasn&#8217;t received a new entry since\u00a0<em>Parappa the Rapper 2\u00a0<\/em>was released for the Playstation 2 all the way back in 2001.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Darkstalkers<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/darkstalkers.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Capcom is a developer that is highly regarded for their fighting games, most namely the\u00a0<em>Street Fighter\u00a0<\/em>series and the\u00a0<em>Marvel Vs. Capcom\u00a0<\/em>series. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fighting-games-need-reboot-darkstalkers-marvel-vs-capcom\/\">throughout the &#8217;90s, they released numerous other fighting game franchises that haven&#8217;t received new entries in decades<\/a>. One of the most notable of these series is\u00a0<em>Darkstalkers.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-90s-fighting-games-ranked\/\">Ranked: Top 10 Fighting Games of the 1990&#8217;s<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Often regarded for its impressive sprite work and visual style,\u00a0<em>Darkstalkers\u00a0<\/em>is a game heavily influenced by a wide range of horror media. While numerous characters from the series have appeared in games such as entries in the\u00a0<em>Marvel Vs. Capcom\u00a0<\/em>series, a brand new\u00a0<em>Darkstalkers\u00a0<\/em>game hasn&#8217;t been released since\u00a0<em>Darkstalkers 3\u00a0<\/em>released in 1998.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Earthbound\/Mother<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2a337f94b16e0c8bcc4cce7ef0eef8e663dfa72fr1-700-394v2-uhq.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to cult classics produced by Nintendo, one can&#8217;t help but mention the\u00a0<em>Mother Franchise.\u00a0<\/em>While the first and third entries in the series were initially only released in Japan (with\u00a0<em>Mother 3\u00a0<\/em>still lacking any form of localization), the second game in the series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/weirdest-forgotten-console-exclusive-video-games\/\"><em>Earthbound\u00a0<\/em>was released in the west<\/a>. The home of Ness, who many players may know from the\u00a0<em>Super<\/em>\u00a0<em>Smash Bros\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0\u00a0the game is often regarded for its comedic yet modern approach to a traditional turn based RPG.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0the series\u00a0has a devout following, and even inspired games such as\u00a0<em>Undertale\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Lisa, <\/em>a new entry in the series hasn&#8217;t been produced since the Japan-exclusive\u00a0<em>Mother 3\u00a0<\/em>in 2006.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Zombies Ate My Neighbors<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Zombies-Ate-My-Neighbors-Co-Op-Monster.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released by Lucasarts in 1993 for the Sega Genesis and the SNES,\u00a0<em>Zombies Ate My Neighbors\u00a0<\/em>is a memorable &#8220;run and gun&#8221; of the era. Possessing a distinct horror-comedy aesthetic while drawing influence from a myriad of horror films, the\u00a0gameplay of\u00a0<em>Zombies Ate My Neighbors\u00a0<\/em>is fondly remembered due to its excellent co-op multiplayer that allows two players to fend off the horrors of the night together. Unfortunately for its fans, while the game received a sequel in the form of\u00a0<em>Ghoul Patrol\u00a0<\/em>in 1994,\u00a0aside from re-releases and ports, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/zombies-ate-my-neighbors-2-reboot-next-gen\/\">there have been no new entries in the series in over twenty-five years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/tactics-ogre.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-games-classic-replay-ps5-backwards-compatible\/\"><em>Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was originally released in Japan in 1995, and is quite an influential release in the tactical RPG genre. Helping popularize an isometric view in tactical RPGs,\u00a0<em>Tactics Ogre\u00a0<\/em>helped pave the way for games such as the\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy Tactics\u00a0<\/em>series, and the <em>Disgaea\u00a0<\/em>series. Additionally, the game featured revolutionary storytelling that helped to form what was possible to include within a game in the tactics genre. Though the game has been ported to numerous consoles, the last game to be released in the series was\u00a0<i><span class=\"nowrap\">Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Snowboard Kids<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/snowboard-kids.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Snowboard Kids\u00a0<\/em>is a cult classic snowboarding racing\u00a0series released by Atlus. While the games in the\u00a0series are indeed snowboarding games, featuring elements such as the ability to do tricks and the requirement of downhill momentum, the series has many similarities to kart racers like\u00a0<em>Mario Kart,\u00a0<\/em>such as the inclusions of items and power-ups. Though\u00a0<em>Snow-Board Kids\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Snowboard Kids 2\u00a0<\/em>celebrated moderate amounts of success on the Nintendo 64, the last time we&#8217;ve seen the series was its failed attempt of a reboot for the DS with\u00a0<em>SBK: Snowboard Kids\u00a0<\/em>in 2005.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Rival Schools: United By Fate<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/rival-schools.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Another forgotten fighting game franchise released by Capcom in the 90s,\u00a0<em>Rival Schools: United By Fate<\/em>, is a game that features a cast of characters within a Japanese high school setting.\u00a0The majority of the game&#8217;s roster are teachers, the heads of school clubs, or\u00a0stars of various sports teams, giving the game a very unique aesthetic. While the majority of fighting games are 2D or 2.5D affairs,\u00a0<em>Rival Schools\u00a0<\/em>is a 3D fighter, like\u00a0<em>Tekken.\u00a0<\/em>While the game shares a universe with\u00a0<em>Street Fighter<\/em>, and it has been announced that one of the game&#8217;s characters, Akira, whill be appearing as DLC in\u00a0<em>Street Fighter V<\/em>, a\u00a0<em>Rival Schools\u00a0<\/em>game hasn&#8217;t been released since the release of\u00a0<em>Project Justice\u00a0<\/em>in 2001.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Dungeons &amp; Dragons:\u00a0Shadow over Mystara<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dungeons-and-dragons-shadow-over-mystara.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Shadow over Mystara\u00a0<\/em>is a well-tuned and celebrated traditonal arcade beat &#8217;em up that takes place in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dungeons-and-dragons-lore-must-have-npcs-for-campaign\/\">the world of\u00a0<\/a><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons.\u00a0<\/em>While many other games in the genre feature characters that play completely the same from one and other, he game features numerous unique characters with abilities based on their corresponding class. This helps to provide the game with an extra layer of depth and strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The game was notably ported to the Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network in 2013.
