These are the very best examples of human achievement, demi-gods who can run the fastest, jump the highest, and lift the heaviest. It\u2019s the opening ceremony where these <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/paris-2024-olympics-esports\/\">best-of-the-best are revealed to the world<\/a>\u2026 and who should steal the show but a frumpy 57-year-old Englishman who (self-confessed) has \u201cnever worked out a day in his life\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, for all the athletes and spectacle at the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, the event will primarily be remembered for Rowan Atkinson\u2019s revival of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fall-guys-custom-skateboard-bean\/\">his iconic character, Mr. Bean<\/a>. Supposedly \u2018retired\u2019 after the film <em>Mr. Bean\u2019s Holiday<\/em> premiered in 2007, the lovable buffoon made his triumphant return at the international sporting event, surprising audiences and participants alike.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/2020-olympics-postponed\/\">Report: 2020 Olympics Postponed<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But in recent years, titbits of information have been released, explaining the story behind Atkinson\u2019s presence at the ceremony. From why the character made an appearance, to how the team cheated certain elements, here\u2019s the secret story behind Mr. Bean\u2019s iconic Olympic performance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z0ZY0whadOA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Titled <em>Isles of Wonder<\/em>, the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony faced serious <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mario-sonic-olympic-games-tokyo-2020-review\/\">public apprehension from its inception<\/a>. The 2008 <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fallout-5-map-setting-china\/\">Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing<\/a> was called the \u201cgreatest of all time\u201d by critics, praised for its spectacle and extravagance \u2013 it was estimated that ceremony cost \u00a365m alone, whereas the London edition had a measly \u00a327m to work with. With this decrease in budget and a high benchmark to meet, many in the media were pessimistic about the ceremony\u2019s chance of success, with a vocal majority predicting it was going to be an outright embarrassment. But the UK had a secret weapon: British culture.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/London-2012-Olympic-Opening-Ceremony.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Directed by <em>Trainspotting<\/em> and <em>Slumdog Millionaire<\/em> mastermind Danny Boyle, the ceremony set out to be a celebration of British culture and history, featuring such touchpoints like Shakespeare, the Industrial Revolution, and Tim Berners-Less inventing the world wide web. However, Boyle also wanted to celebrate the famous \u201cBritish sense of humour\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/mr-bean-funny-skits-ranked-tv-show\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">so naturally turned to Mr. Bean<\/a>. By being mute, the bumbling pseudo-mime had become beloved all over the world, with audiences enjoying his slapstick antics without the language barrier.<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly, Boyle approached Atkinson and character co-creator Richard Curtis on using the famous figure, and they set about crafting his appearance without the rest of the performers knowing: Mr. Bean\u2019s presence was kept an utter secret. Only Sir Simon Rattle, the conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra who Mr. Bean \u2018performed\u2019 with, knew the whole truth of the performance and so he could rehearse his small interaction with Atkinson. It\u2019s obvious the two got along \u2013 Rattle was invited by Atkinson to help perform on the score of his upcoming film, <em>Johnny English Strikes Again<\/em>. Ironically, however, neither Atkinson nor the LSO are actually playing in this section: he told Classic FM radio show that the whole thing (including sections played by the actual orchestra) was \u201cpre-recorded, so I was just miming to the music\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the song played by Bean the LSO references the film <em>Chariots of Fire<\/em>, which tells the true story of two British athletes preparing to compete in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. In a \u2018dream sequence\u2019, Bean parodies the most memorable sequence of this film: the British running team jogging down a wet and windy beach. In Mr. Bean\u2019s iteration, however, he gets tired and hires a taxicab to bring him the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Mr-Bean-Chariots-of-Fire.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Surprisingly, however, Atkinson wasn\u2019t on set for this sequence, due to scheduling conflicts and to keep Mr. Bean\u2019s appearance under wraps, so Mr. Bean\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ark-live-action-series\/\">expressive head was VFX<\/a>-ed onto another runner\u2019s body. Misleading?
