2020 may have been rather sparse when it comes to brand new Nintendo games, but the ones that have come out have proved to be critical hits, as reviews for\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em><\/a> can attest. This looks like it will also be the case for the company\u2019s last big title for this year, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nintendo and Koei Tecmo set quite a challenge for themselves by making the next Hyrule Warriors<\/em> game a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/em>. Not only do they have to follow up one of the most highly-acclaimed video games ever made, but answer the burning questions fans have had about Breath of the Wild<\/em>\u2019s backstory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The good news is that the two have largely pulled it off, according to Japanese magazine Famitsu. Continuing its trend of publishing the first reviews for Switch games like Paper Mario: The Origami King<\/em><\/a>, the magazine has gotten ahead of other publications and given Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a> a final score of 36\/40, after its four reviewers each awarded the game a 9\/10.\u00a0According to Ryokutya2089 (via Video Games Chronicle), the reviewers were more than pleased with the game, calling it \u201chighly satisfying as a spin-off of Breath of the Wild<\/em>\u201d and praising the \u201cstrong blend\u201d of elements from that game and the Dynasty Warriors<\/em> franchise.<\/p>\n

Although a score of\u00a036\/40 keeps Age of Calamity<\/em> from joining the ranks of Famitsu’s most highly-reviewed games<\/a>, it is the magazine’s second-highest score for a Switch game this year, tying with other titles like Paper Mario: The Origami King<\/em> and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition<\/em>. Only Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em> has scored higher, having received a score of 38\/40.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, what\u2019s currently available of Famitsu\u2019s review doesn\u2019t provide any clues as to what the game\u2019s story will have to offer, so it remains to be seen if it\u2019s as good as the gameplay appears to be. That said, with what Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have teased of the story, and the intriguing implications of Age of Calamity<\/em>\u2019s Mini Guardian<\/a>, it\u2019s very likely that it will have a few major twists to throw fans\u2019 way.<\/p>\n

Anticipation remains high for the game, despite the concerns fans have about Age of Calamity<\/em>\u2019s framerate<\/a>, and with Famitsu\u2019s review scoring so high, chances are good that subsequent reviews will be full of similar praise when they become available in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/strong> will launch on November 20 for the Switch.<\/p>\n
