Mario&#8217;s success stems from the incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-nintendo-wii-games-best-worst\/\">lineup of games that he has featured in<\/a> over the years, many of which have been key in\u00a0elevating the gaming industry to where it is today. For example, the original <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/super-mario\/\"><em>Super Mario Bros.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0revitalized the home console industry after the Atari 2600 bought it crashing down with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/atari-2600-best-selling-games-ranked-sales\/\">their <em>Pac-Man<\/em> port and <em>E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial<\/em><\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Super%20Mario%2064\/\"><em>Super Mario 6<\/em>4<\/a> revolutionized 3D gaming as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-cheap-playstation-sale-games-ranked\/\">10 Great PlayStation Games Under $10, Ranked By Metacritic<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the plumber&#8217;s few downsides is that he only appears on Nintendo consoles, preventing millions of\u00a0gamers from enjoying his many excellent adventures. Thankfully for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/playstation\/\">PlayStation<\/a> users, Sony&#8217;s consoles have released <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/underrated-90s-3d-platformers-everyone-forgot\/\">many great platformers<\/a> and collect-a-thons over the years to scratch that Mario itch.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Updated by Jack Pursey<\/strong><\/em>: With Microsoft&#8217;s recent acquisition of Bethesda and the chances of Nintendo bringing\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-legend-of-zelda\/\">Zelda<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Mario\u00a0<\/em>to other consoles being virtually zero, it seems as though exclusivity in the gaming industry is set to continue for other generation of home consoles. The frustration over exclusive titles is often exacerbated when a new critically acclaimed title is released, such as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Super%20Mario%203D%20World\/\">Super Mario 3D World + Bowser&#8217;s Fury<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>on the Nintendo Switch.\u00a0The game&#8217;s release will have given many <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/PlayStation\/\">PlayStation<\/a> gamers a platforming itch, so we&#8217;ve decided to expand this list by a further five entries to give more ideas of\u00a0<em>Mario<\/em>-like titles to play on the blue brand of console.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">15 <\/span>Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/yooka-laylee-and-the-impossible-lair-box-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say that the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Yooka-Laylee\/\">Yooka-Laylee<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise didn&#8217;t get off to the best of starts. The original game had a ton of hype behind it and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/yooka-laylee-fastest-kickstarter-game-1-million\/\">broke records with its Kickstarter backing<\/a>,\u00a0though the final product failed to impress, exemplified by\u00a0the PlayStation 4 iteration scoring just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/playstation-4\/yooka-laylee\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">68 on Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many people thought that the\u00a0lackluster reviews and fan response would mark the end of the franchise. However, a new game was released just a couple of years later with a significant change of direction.<em> Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair<\/em> ditched its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Banjo-Kazooie\/\"><em>Banjo-Kazooie<\/em><\/a> influences in favor of side-scrolling\u00a0action similar to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Donkey%20Kong%20Country\/\">Donkey Kong Country<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Rayman%20Legends\/\"><em>Rayman Legends<\/em><\/a> and was a far more enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">14 <\/span>Sackboy: A Big Adventure<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SackBoy-A-Big-Adventure-Video-Game-Hot-Air-Ballons.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Launch titles are often key to a console&#8217;s success in its first year. Consequently,\u00a0there was significant interest from those with the PlayStation 5 on pre-order when\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Sackboy:%20A%20Big%20Adventure\/\">Sackboy: A Big Adventure<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released on the same day as the console.<\/p>\n<p>It would be disingenuous to call\u00a0Sumo Digital&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Sackboy: A Big Adventure\u00a0<\/em>a console seller, though it&#8217;s a solid platforming experience for fans of the genre.\u00a0Although the game has obvious comparisons to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/LittleBigPlanet\/\"><em>LittleBigPlanet<\/em><\/a>, the gameplay is vastly different.\u00a0<em>Sackboy: A Big Adventure\u00a0<\/em>ditches\u00a0<em>LittleBigPlanet<\/em>&#8216;s 2.5D perspective in favor of 3D and is more intent on providing <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-better-as-linear-action-games-mass-effect-andromeda-sniper-ghost-warrior-3-far-cry-5\/\">a focused, linear experience<\/a> rather than a wealth of customizability.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">13 <\/span>Celeste<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Celeste.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Matt Makes Games&#8217; <em>Celeste<\/em> was released in 2018 and quickly became recognized as one of modern gaming&#8217;s toughest platformers. Not only is the main game tricky to complete, but beating the game 100% is <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/platformers-harder-than-cuphead\/\">incredibly challenging<\/a>\u00a0as players need to collect difficult-to-reach strawberries and Crystal Hearts, as well as beating the punishingly tough B-side tapes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/games-like-genshin-impact\/\">16 Games To Play If You Liked Genshin Impact<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although the game is undeniably tough, it never feels unfair, thanks to the wonderfully crafted control scheme that makes controlling Madeline feel tight and responsive. Moreover, the difficulty never feels like a gimmick as it ties perfectly into the game&#8217;s profound story.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">12 <\/span>A Hat In Time<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/a-hat-in-time.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Yooka-Laylee<\/em> isn&#8217;t the only franchise on this list to find success on Kickstarter, as\u00a0<em>A Hat In Time<\/em>\u00a0smashed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/jonaskaerlev\/a-hat-in-time-3d-collect-a-thon-platformer\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its $30,000 goal on the site with an eye-watering $296,360 pledged<\/a>. Much like the original\u00a0<em>Yooka-Laylee<\/em>,\u00a0<em>A Hat In Time<\/em>&#8216;s success on Kickstarter led to the game receiving a huge weight of expectation, which it was never likely to reach. Although it doesn&#8217;t reach the heights of some of the platforming genre&#8217;s best titles,\u00a0<em>A Hat In Time\u00a0<\/em>is still a thoroughly enjoyable and wholesome experience.<\/p>\n<p>One final similarity between the game and <em>Yooka-Layle\u00a0<\/em>is that both tried to recreate the magic of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Banjo-Kazooie\/\">Banjo-Kazooie<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><em>A Hat In Time\u00a0<\/em>did a solid job of accomplishing this, with its\u00a0visually impressive and well-designed open levels.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">11 <\/span>New Super Lucky&#8217;s Tale<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/New-Super-Luckys-Tale-PS4-Xbox-One.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When the original\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Super%20Lucky's%20Tale\/\">Super Lucky&#8217;s Tale<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2017, many PlayStation owners were understandably disappointed that the platformer wasn&#8217;t\u00a0coming to the blue brand of console. However, such people were in luck when\u00a0<em>New Super Lucky&#8217;s Tale\u00a0<\/em>came to PlayStation 4 in 2020.\u00a0<em>New Super Lucky&#8217;s Tale\u00a0<\/em>is an expanded version of the original, fit with significant improvements to the level-design and camera.<\/p>\n<p><em>New Super Lucky&#8217;s Tale<\/em>\u00a0is certainly not the most difficult game on this list,\u00a0though it&#8217;s not patronizingly easy either, as the fairly simple levels are made more challenging with the numerous objectives and items to find and collect within.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/crash-nsane.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Activision delighted fans of the orange marsupial when they announced that they were remaking the original <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Crash%20Bandicoot\/\"><em>Crash Bandicoot<\/em><\/a> trilogy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/stories-about-crash-bandicoots-development\/\">Naughty Dog&#8217;s first game, released in 1996<\/a>, was an attempt from Sony to create a PlayStation mascot to rival Nintendo&#8217;s Mario and Sega&#8217;s Sonic.<\/p>\n<p>Naughty Dog undoubtedly did their part, as they created three games that are still among PlayStation&#8217;s best platformers today. The trilogy&#8217;s levels are far more linear than those featured in Mario&#8217;s 3D adventures, but like Mario,\u00a0Crash has some of gaming&#8217;s most well-designed stages with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-n-sane-trilogy-hardest-platinum-relics\/\">numerous optional extras to collect along the way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Spyro Reignited Trilogy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/spyro-reignited.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-spyro-dragon-playstations-best-platforming-mascot\/\"><em>Crash Bandicoot<\/em> isn&#8217;t the only PlayStation mascot\u00a0that has had their PS1 trilogy remade<\/a>; Activision\u00a0released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Spyro%20Reignited%20Trilogy\/\"><em>Spyro Reignited Trilogy<\/em><\/a>\u00a0just over a year after the<em> N. Sane Trilogy.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The trilogy&#8217;s\u00a0platforming doesn&#8217;t compare to Mario&#8217;s, and the purple dragon&#8217;s move-set is far more limited. However, Spyro&#8217;s excellently designed open levels are filled to the brim with hidden collectibles to find,\u00a0giving Mario&#8217;s best collect-a-thons like\u00a0<em>Super Mario 64<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-odyssey-crazy-capture\/\"><em>Super Mario Odyssey<\/em> a run for their money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/rachet-and-clank-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Like <em>Spyro<\/em>, <em>Ratchet and Clank<\/em> was created by Insomniac Games. Unlike Spyro though, Insomniac Games have stuck with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ratchet%20and%20Clank\/\"><em>Ratchet and Clank<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and kept the series&#8217; quality consistent.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sims-4-similar-games-recommendations\/\">15 Games You Should Play If You Like The Sims 4<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Any main-series <em>Ratchet and Clank<\/em> game could feature on this list, but <em>Going Commando<\/em>\u00a0the best of the bunch. The game may not appear to be comparable to Mario with its gun-blasting action, but\u00a0at its core, the game is still one of the best family-friendly platformers around.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Psychonauts<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/psychonauts.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Despite receiving tons of praise from both fans and critics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/playstation-2\/psychonauts\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exemplified by its Metascore and user score<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Psychonauts\/\"><em>Psychonauts<\/em><\/a> went somewhat under the radar upon its 2005 release. Xbox Game Studios will be hoping that the series catches more mainstream attention in 2021 as they&#8217;ve partnered with the original game&#8217;s creators Double Fine to make <em>Psychonauts 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The platformer differentiates itself from others on this list with the playable character Raz&#8217;s psychic powers like telekinesis and\u00a0levitation that give the game a unique playstyle.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Crash Bandicoot 4: It&#8217;s About Time<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/crash-4.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>If the idea of <em>Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy<\/em> interests you, but you&#8217;re not a fan of remasters, then you&#8217;re in luck as Activision and Toys For Bob recently teamed up to create a brand new <em>Crash Bandicoot<\/em> game. The game ignores the Bandicoot&#8217;s many PS2 and PS3 titles and is a direct sequel to 1998&#8217;s <em>Crash Bandicoot: Warped<\/em>. This may sound like a jarring decision, but it makes sense when playing\u00a0it as the gameplay is heavily inspired by the original trilogy. The well-designed linear levels return, as do the optional gems and relics that significantly flesh the game out.<\/p>\n<p><em>Crash Bandicoot 4: It&#8217;s About Time<\/em> is the best choice for experienced Mario players looking to challenge themselves, as the game is by far the toughest on this list. Completing the main story isn&#8217;t too taxing, especially with the modern mode&#8217;s unlimited lives, but completing the game 100% is a nightmare. Toys For Bob have <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-4-hardest-relics\/\">ramped up the series&#8217; difficulty significantly<\/a>\u00a0with numerous boxes hidden out of sight in most levels and brutally short platinum relic times.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Ape Escape<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ape-escape.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The first <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ape%20Escape\/\"><em>Ape Escape<\/em><\/a> game is also the series&#8217; best. As the name suggests, the 1999 PS1 game\u00a0requires players to capture apes that are scattered across smartly-designed levels.<\/p>\n<p>Capturing the apes is easier said than done, though, as not only do some of them fight back, but reaching them often requires traversing tricky platforming sections and the use of gadgets like the Stun Club and Rubber Raft.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>LittleBigPlanet 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/littlebigplanet-2-ps3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Sony had a problem on its hands in 2006. The once highly anticipated PS3 was losing more and more steam before its release, with constant delays pushing consumers to the Xbox 360. Furthermore, Xbox&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Halo<\/em> series\u00a0had already established something that Sony had been looking for, a mascot character. Fast-forward to 2008, and the PS3 had finally found its feet after a poor start. With the PS3 on smoother water, Sony decided to take another punt at creating a mascot character in the shape of Sackboy.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, Sackboy didn&#8217;t become the leading mascot that Sony may have hoped for, but the character has featured in numerous excellent games, the best of which is <em>LittleBigPlanet 2. T<\/em>he series&#8217; second game has many fantastic 2.5D platforming levels and offers a great range of customization options, including the ability to create stages.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Rayman Legends<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/rayman-legends.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For fans of Mario&#8217;s side-scrolling adventures, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rayman-games-worst-best-ranked-metacritic\/\"><em>Rayman Legends<\/em> is the perfect substitute<\/a>. It once seemed as though Rayman was hanging up his floating boots as a platformer and starting a new life in party games with the release of\u00a0<em>Rayman Raving Rabbids<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/action-rpgs-like-dark-souls\/\">15 Action RPGs To Play If You Like Dark Souls<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Rayman returned to platforming life in style, as Ubisoft released one incredible platformer after another with <em>Rayman Legends<\/em> following <em>Rayman Origins<\/em>. The games proved that there was a place for 2D platformers in modern gaming, and\u00a0the PS5 will hopefully see the series make a return.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Rayman 2: The Great Escape<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/rayman-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Whereas<em> Rayman Legends<\/em> is ideal for Mario&#8217;s side-scrolling fans, <em>Rayman 2: The Great Escape<\/em> is perfect for\u00a0those who enjoy the plumber&#8217;s 3D adventures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rayman 2: The Great Escap<\/em>e is almost unrecognizable from its 2D predecessor <em>Rayman<\/em>, with open 3D levels that are littered with collectibles.
