Once upon a time,\u00a0players could simply pop a cartridge or a disc into\u00a0a system and it would play. But nowadays,\u00a0players must sit and wait while the game downloads.\u00a0This process could take hours or even days depending on the size of the game, internet speed, and whether or not the PS4 feels like doing it that day.<\/p>\n

While some games are a respectable and understandable size, some are true behemoths. Surprisingly, not all of them are newer releases either such as\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/em><\/a> — the game that seems to have been released on every system in the last decade or so.\u00a0These are the ten biggest PS4<\/a> games by file size, ranked.<\/p>\n

After all, many next-gen titles will still be releasing for the PS4. Unfortunately, fans who may want to get into Demon’s Souls<\/a> can’t (so far). But no matter: there are plenty of games for fans to indulge in from next-gen, current-gen, and even a few older games. The trouble is finding room on their hard-drives for them.<\/em><\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Spider-Man ~ 45 GB<\/h2>\n

Spider-Man<\/em><\/a> is one of the best PS4 exclusives, but it’s also one of the biggest. It eats up roughly 45 GB of hard drive space which is certainly no laughing matter. It’s not really hard to gauge why it takes up so much space \u2014 the map is\u00a0as massive and dense as it is a picture-perfect digital recreation of New York City.<\/p>\n

All that said,\u00a0players don’t seem to mind the massive install size. The game’s world\u00a0received critical acclaim and is widely regarded as the greatest city recreation in video game history. But new players with a PS5 can pick up the new\u00a0Miles Morales<\/a><\/em> version<\/a> that includes his game and the original Spiderman. But they’ll need around 105 GB of space for that.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>The Witcher III: Wild Hunt ~ 50 GB<\/h2>\n

Speaking of great video games, let’s talk about The Witcher III<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0This game is still fresh on everyone’s minds thanks to the recently released Netflix series.\u00a0New fans looking to try the game out for themselves should know that it comes with a relatively\u00a0healthy 50 GB install size.<\/p>\n

However, for that price, players receive one of the greatest and most interactive open worlds in gaming history. Fans can use the game to stave off withdrawals until season 2 of the series releases.<\/p>\n

FPS franchise reboots\u00a0seem to be on-trend in the last few years. Wolfenstein: The New Order<\/em><\/a>\u00a0incorporated the classic games into its fast-paced and beautiful gameplay. But extreme weapon variety, unique\u00a0characters, crazy plots, and lots of locations\u00a0make for a big game.<\/p>\n

The base game, patches, and updates bring\u00a0the total game size to about 50 GB of hard drive space.\u00a0Many fans consider it a fair trade\u00a0due to the game’s fairly long playtime. Plus, they can always delete it when they’re done.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Doom ~ 50-70 GB<\/h2>\n

If you want to play one of the greatest first-person shooters of the modern era, it can cost anywhere from 50 to 70 GB of space. Doom<\/em><\/a> is a surprising monster of a game, and its base install runs about 50 GB.<\/p>\n

Such power requires space, and with a base install of 50 GB and a day one 5 GB patch, Uncharted 4<\/em> will take up at least 55 GB of hard drive space.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto V ~ 68 – 76 GB<\/h2>\n

It’s difficult to believe that Grand Theft Auto V<\/em><\/a>\u00a0doesn’t take up more space. But 68 GB is not\u00a0exactly an insignificant amount of space either. While GTA V<\/em> is six years old, it’s still a whopper of a game thanks to its incredibly large and detailed open world. Not only that, there have been numerous patches released over the years on top of\u00a0Grand Theft Auto Online.<\/em>\u00a0A testament to the game’s action and fun levels, this aspect still manages to make waves and top the charts. In the end,\u00a0this game clocks in at 70 GB to experience everything it has to offer.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>The Last of Us 2 ~78 – 100 GB<\/h2>\n

Naughty Dog’s long-awaited sequel to The Last of Us<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is bigger than even the remaster’s size by at least 25 GB. The base game\u00a0takes up\u00a0about\u00a078 GB on a PS4 hard drive. But the game\u00a0needs a\u00a0total of 100 GB of free space to simply download.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0means that PS4 owners might have to delete multiple games just play\u00a0a single title.\u00a0Not all fans can rationalize sacrificing that much space for a single game. A titan of a franchise by now, Call of Duty<\/em><\/a>\u00a0resonates with people who don’t even play those games. But as big as the franchise’s notoriety is, the game file sizes seem to match. The unfortunate fad of FPS titles being bloated with other content continues in\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops 4<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0With save files and the DLCs installed, the game can take up to 80 GB on a PS4.<\/p>\n

If new players ever want to try the game, veterans recommend trying out an external hard drive instead of making room on their PS4.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Final Fantasy VX ~100 GB<\/h2>\n

The game featured a real-time-fighting system with plenty of action and incredible graphics. However, in combination with patches and expansions, the game ballooned in size to a whopping 100 GB of hard drive space. But hard-core fans of the series can always justify making room for it.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Call Of Duty: Black Ops III ~ 80-100 GB<\/h2>\n

The base game alone needed 55 GB of hard drive space\u00a0and the needed space has only grown.\u00a0Updates, patches, DLC have all contributed to the game’s total need of anywhere between 80 and 100 GB. The exact size varies from player to player, but it’s a colossus regardless.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Red Dead Redemption\u00a02 ~ 105 GB<\/h2>\n

Since every player customizes their experience, the file sizes vary wildly. Some players report a file size around the 80 GB area while others claim that\u00a0it can reach 120 GB.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Destiny 2 ~ 165 GB – 186 GB<\/h2>\n

Destiny 2<\/em><\/a> is a controversial game; it’s also a very big game.\u00a0While the\u00a0base Destiny 2<\/em> doesn’t take up much space,\u00a0the post-release content and expansions\u00a0drive up the file size. Before Shadowkeep<\/em>, the game sat at around\u00a080 GB. But Shadowkeep<\/em>\u00a0alone runs upwards of 70 GB.<\/p>\n

The Developers say that the game will “shrink to a third of that size” once installed. But\u00a0players will likely need to delete a few games\u00a0or get a separate hard drive to play Destiny 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare ~ 175 GB<\/h2>\n

Modern Warfare<\/em><\/a>\u00a0remains a popular multiplayer extravaganza.\u00a0But if\u00a0new players want to\u00a0join the frenzy,\u00a0it requires some serious hard drive real estate. Modern Warfare<\/em>, yet another\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> game,\u00a0requires an unbelievable\u00a0107 GB just for the base game.<\/p>\n

That was outrageous enough, but then people learned there was a massive 50 GB day one update — the same size as\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Witcher III.<\/em>\u00a0With the addition of the 15 GB Spec Ops stuff,\u00a0players can easily\u00a0top 175 GB of hard drive space. It’s a doozy.<\/p>\n
