Studio Ghibli is known for producing beautiful works of art through traditional 2D animation, but the acclaimed studio\u00a0will venture\u00a0into new territory when its first CG animated feature Aya\u00a0and the Witch<\/em> debuts shortly after Christmas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Goro Miyazaki, son of famed director Hayao Miyazaki, directs the studio\u2019s first venture into 3D animation. Aya<\/a>\u00a0and the Witch<\/em> debuts in Japan<\/a> on December 30th with a North American release through GKIDS slated for early 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aya\u00a0and the Witch<\/em> is based off of a novel by author Diana Wynne Jones. The story follows an orphan named Aya<\/a>\u00a0who was dropped off at an orphanage as a baby, but has been treated like royalty since childhood. That all changes when Bella Yaga whisks\u00a0Aya away from the orphanage and into a world of magic and talking animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time that Studio Ghibli has used Jones’ work as inspiration. Hayao Miyazaki used her work<\/a> as reference in the 2004 film <\/span>Howl\u2019s Moving Castle<\/span><\/i>, which earned an Academy Award Nomination for Best Animated Feature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hayao Miyazaki retired from feature film production<\/a> in 2013 and has been turning over much of the reins of Studio Ghibli to his son Goro over the years. Goro is responsible for directing <\/a>the Studio Ghibli films Tales from Earthsea<\/em> and From Up on Poppy Hill<\/em>. He seems like a good fit for directing the Studio\u2019s first CG anime film after wining an Emmy for the CG anime series Ronja the Robber\u2019s Daughter.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

While Studio Ghibli movies are known for their beautiful animation their works are also story driven. It will be interesting to see whether the tradition of great story telling translates into this 3D film.<\/p>\n

Aya\u00a0and the Witch\u00a0<\/em>releases in Japan on December 30.<\/p>\n
