Tetris Effect<\/em> has gone down as one the best versions of Tetris<\/em><\/a> for the way it marries the iconic tile-matching gameplay with a stunning mix of cerebral visuals and audio. It\u2019s an highly-acclaimed experience that has been exclusive to PC and PS4 gamers for the past two years, but with the launch of its expanded version, Tetris Effect: Connected<\/em><\/strong>, Xbox gamers can now experience it for themselves.<\/p>\n

Like the updated title suggests, the biggest addition to the 2018 puzzler is its four new multiplayer modes. These include variations on the classic Score Attack mode seen in other Tetris<\/em> games, as well as the titular Connected mode. This mode, which sees three players team up to defeat AI-controlled bosses, offers the biggest twist on the core Tetris<\/em> formula the most by allowing players to merge their different playing fields into one and help clear away their teammates’ tiles.<\/p>\n

Given the critical acclaim the original release of Tetris Effect<\/em> received<\/a>, it wouldn\u2019t have taken much for the updated version to wow critics all over again, but judging from the reviews, Tetris Effect<\/a><\/em>‘s\u00a0new multiplayer (plus the visual optimization\u00a0it’s\u00a0received for the Xbox Series X) have gone a long way towards making a great game even better.<\/p>\n

Not everything needs to be this wide-spanning, deep gaming experience. Sometimes, the less you do on screen the more you can tune into what\u2019s happening. I loved feeling like I couldn\u2019t put it down after a few hours. I enjoyed the music and building up to a big beat drop or explosion of colors on-screen. Most of all, I loved how calm and relaxing it was to play. 2020 needs this game.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure if I\u2019m comfortable saying that it\u2019s my game of the year, but it\u2019s easily the shining star of the Xbox Series S|X launch to me. Tetris Effect Connected brings multiple creative, beautiful, and mesmerizing spins to the Tetris formula that anyone with Game Pass owes it to themself to play and try out, especially those who missed the original. Sweetened by its hypnotic, up-tempo soundtrack and pseudo-psychedelic visuals, Tetris has never felt better than in Tetris Effect. Now with a robust multiplayer offering, Tetris Effect Connected allows it to rival Tetris 99 for the spot of my favorite entry in the franchise.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tetris Effect: Connected is to this point the best version of Tetris that exists. I adore Tetris99 and up until now, Tetris DS was probably my all-time favourite, but Connected just blows right past both. utside very very minor quibbles with the slight lag in multiplayer and my disappointment at the missed opportunity for Achievement art, there\u2019s nothing actually wrong with this game. t\u2019s mandatory for Tetris and puzzle game fans, a must for music lovers and anyone who appreciates good visual artistry. But most importantly, it\u2019s just so damn fun.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s almost unfair, really, to take a game that was already so fearsome and sort of find a bunch of ways to make it even more interesting and dynamic and maddening and beautiful. Whenever I think of Tetris Effect – and Tetris Effect: Connected, which again, I should reiterate, contains the original game as well as the multiplayer stuff – I think of Laniakea, which serves as a map to the campaign screen and is also the supercluster that is home to the Milky Way, the Great Attractor, and so many other billions of glittering wonders and fancies. Load up Tetris Effect and it always shows you where we live. And in playing it, it continues to show us a little something about who we are.<\/em><\/p>\n
