Marvel manages to do this three times a year (when theaters are open) and the studio has yet to produce a box office flop. But not every studio is as lucky as Marvel.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/zelda-tv-show-cast-tom-holland-ganondorf\/\">Who Should Play Ganondorf In The Live-Action Zelda TV Show<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, the stars align and a director and their cast and crew get together to make a movie that\u2019s truly great and will stand the test of time, but either due to poor marketing or simply low interest from the public, the movie crashes and burns financially.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Deepwater Horizon<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Mark-Wahlberg-in-Deepwater-Horizon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Just when BP Oil thought it was off the hook for all the lives its operations have cost over the years (both human and marine life), director Peter Berg spent $156 million on a movie that would hold the company accountable. Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the cast give fantastic performances in a movie that captures both the spirit of working-class Americans and the consequences of BP\u2019s recklessness.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it only grossed $121.8 million. True-to-life dramas are rarely blockbuster fare, and <em>Deepwater Horizon<\/em> needed blockbuster numbers to justify that budget.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Popstar-Never-Stop-Never-Stopping.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Lonely Island troupe reunited in 2016 for a mockumentary about a former boy band member\u2019s attempts to make a solo career work. <em>Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/best-worst-mockumentary-comedy-films-ever\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a great satire of celebrities like Justin Bieber<\/a>, with tons of jokes crammed into its 87-minute runtime.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, <em>Popstar<\/em> failed to catch on, and only grossed $9.7 million against its $20 million budget, despite the renewed interest in Andy Samberg from <em>Brooklyn Nine-Nine<\/em>\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Dredd<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Karl-Urban-in-Dredd.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After Sylvester Stallone\u2019s bitterly disappointing PG-13 <em>Judge Dredd<\/em> movie from the \u201890s, <em>2000 A.D.<\/em> fans were relieved that the character\u2019s second big-screen adaptation \u2013 an ultraviolent R-rated outing starring a perfectly cast Karl Urban \u2013 was <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dredd-behind-scenes-facts-trivia\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the <em>Dredd<\/em> movie they\u2019d waited their whole lives for<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the $45 million movie was badly marketed by the studio and it only went on to gross $41.5 million at the worldwide box office, putting a stop to the planned sequels.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Office Space<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Gary-Cole-in-Office-Space.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Mike Judge\u2019s <em>Office Space<\/em> is one of the funniest movies ever made, and <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/funniest-90s-movies-by-year\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a poignant satire of corporate America in the late \u201890s<\/a>. Despite capturing the zeitgeist perfectly, it struggled at the box office. Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/office-space-behind-scenes-facts-trivia\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hated the poster that the studio made for the movie<\/a>, which depicted an office worker covered head-to-toe in Post-It notes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/minecraft-movie-the-cursed-production-history\/\">The Cursed Production History Of The Minecraft Movie<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the movie\u2019s quirky, pitch-black comic sensibility was a tough sell. Relatable everyday situations usually struggle to draw crowds on a Friday night. On a budget of $10 million, <em>Office Space<\/em> grossed $12.2 million.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Willy Wonka &amp; The Chocolate Factory<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Gene-Wilder-as-Willy-Wonka.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The surreal \u201870s musical adaptation of Roald Dahl\u2019s <em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em> might be considered a beloved classic now, but the Gene Wilder-starring <em>Willy Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory<\/em> went mostly unnoticed upon release. It grossed $4.5 million against its $3 million budget.<\/p>\n<p>Its popularity has grown over the years due to home media and non-stop TV airings. It was eventually popular enough to get a big-budget CGI-ridden reboot courtesy of Tim Burton.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Fight Club<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Brad-Pitt-in-Fight-Club.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>David Fincher\u2019s adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk\u2019s <em>Fight Club<\/em> may be a cult classic now (almost annoyingly so), but it struggled to take off at the box office. The movie\u2019s $101.2 million gross against its $63 million doesn\u2019t make its box office failure look too bad, but when marketing costs were taken into account, it was considered a disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Anchored by Edward Norton and Brad Pitt\u2019s electric performances as the Narrator and Tyler Durden, <em>Fight Club<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/movies-that-defined-90s-cinema\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the definitive movies of its era<\/a>, but ironically didn\u2019t find a wide audience in that era.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>The Iron Giant<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/The-Iron-Giant.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>While Brad Bird would go on to helm such huge box office hits as <em>The Incredibles<\/em> and <em>Ratatouille<\/em> for Pixar, his directorial debut bombed at the box office in the late \u201890s.<\/p>\n<p>Despite bringing a unique and heartfelt angle to a boy-and-his-dog story, <em>The Iron Giant<\/em> only grossed $31.3 million against its budget of $50 million.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Scott-Pilgrim-vs-the-World.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Edgar Wright\u2019s first Hollywood movie after <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/edgar-wright-shaun-dead-vs-hot-fuzz-best-genre-masterpiece-starring-simon-pegg-nick-frost\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">catching American moviegoers\u2019 attention with <em>Shaun of the Dead<\/em> and <em>Hot Fuzz<\/em><\/a> was <em>Scott Pilgrim vs. the World<\/em>, based on Bryan Lee O\u2019Malley\u2019s <em>Scott Pilgrim<\/em> comics.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/halo-tv-series-back-filming\/\">Halo TV Series Back To Filming<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The movie is great, as is usually the case with Wright, but on a budget of $85 million, it only grossed $48.1 million at the worldwide box office.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>The Master<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Philip-Seymour-Hoffman-in-The-Master.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Five years after <em>There Will Be Blood<\/em> was hailed as one of the greatest movies ever made and showered with awards, Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s next movie <em>The Master<\/em> offered possibly an even more poignant character study than his previous work, swapping out oil for cults.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>The Master<\/em> was met with the same critical recognition as its predecessor, it wasn\u2019t nearly as successful at the box office. Having cost $32 million to produce, <em>The Master<\/em> only grossed $28.3 million. But it\u2019s a bona fide masterpiece.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Blade Runner 2049<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Blade-Runner-2049.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Denis Villeneuve did the impossible with the long-awaited <em>Blade Runner<\/em> sequel <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em>: he made a sequel to a seemingly untouchable masterpiece that satisfies as a continuation of its story and <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/blade-runner-film-noir-tropes-sci-fi-twist\/\">an expansion of its world<\/a>, and even enhances the original with the new insights it provides.
