Few games have been remixed by fans as much as the original Doom<\/em><\/strong>. While there\u2019s a well-recorded history of Doom<\/em> being made playable through unconventional means like pregnancy tests<\/a> and inside other video games, plenty of modders have taken a different approach and focused on applying more modern game design ideas to the 1993 shooter. Case in point, the latest of these mods has turned Doom and its sequel into open-world games.<\/p>\n

This reimagining comes courtesy of a modder known as ddadd, who released a \u201cFreeroam\u201d pack for Doom 2<\/em> this week after releasing one for Doom 1<\/em> back in September. Like the name suggests, these mods remove the linear structuring of the Doom<\/em> games\u2019 levels<\/a> as well as the menus that separate them in the official versions, giving longtime fans a brand new way to explore these classic demon-infested locales.<\/p>\n

Both feature plenty of new terrain linking all of the original locations together and secret pathways to discover, though ddadd notes that the open world is better in the Doom 2<\/em> pack than in Doom 1<\/em><\/a>, with \u201chills, lakes, and other bits of varied terrain.\u201d What\u2019s more, in addition to new ways to enter levels, the Freeroam packs provide a few other new features, including merchants that players can trade with for items and weapons and new bosses to fight.<\/p>\n

As far as updates go, then, this is definitely one of the more substantial that the original Doom<\/em> games have received in recent years. In all likelihood, a lot of fans are going to be eager to try it out while they wait for the next batch of official Doom<\/em> content with part 2 of Doom Eternal<\/em>\u2019s The Ancient Gods<\/em> DLC. That, or they could always play Doom<\/em> with a herd of sheep in Minecraft<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>afterward.<\/p>\n
