While the world may be worrying about a variety of things, gamers are still lighting the fires of the ever exhausting and heated console wars. And what better time to celebrate the age-old rivalry than in conjunction with the releases of a couple of shiny new toys? In early November, Microsoft released their teraflop heavy Xbox Series X<\/a> and its minuscule companion, the Series S.<\/p>\n

A couple of days later, Sony responded with the larger, shinier, and SSD-ier PlayStation 5<\/a> and its digital-only version. With the arrival of two very powerful but also very expensive consoles, many gamers are worrying about whether or not they can actually afford the games. Fear now, however, as plenty of old generation titles are coming with next-gen patches, and a few of them are surprising.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While fans have already been waiting a decade for CD Projekt Red’s seminal work, Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, it seems like they may have to wait (hopefully) just a little longer until its release.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, fans may be able to enjoy the game that helped make the company as gilded as it is today, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/a><\/em>. Funny enough, The Witcher 3<\/em> was announced after Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> but released much earlier. Now there\u00a0is even a slight chance that it may even reach next-gen consoles before Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, too, and with a nifty new upgrade to match. This version is scheduled for a 2021 release.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Marvel’s Avengers<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It seems like only yesterday that Marvel fans everywhere were getting excited for the next, fun installment to the franchise’s video game library. Now, it seems like the various issues and controversies surrounding the game have been around for ages, despite it only having released last August.<\/p>\n

While the player base may be dwindling, Square Enix<\/a> did announce a new life for the game to come in 2021. With Marvel’s Avengers<\/em> assembling once more on PS5 and Series X, the next-gen patch will hopefully come alongside a variety of other quality-of-life changes.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>The Elder Scrolls Online<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While Bethesda may have a lot on its plate between its recent partnership with Microsoft and a slew of games to come, it’s nice to see the company giving some next-gen love to some of its previous games, one of the biggest parts of Bethesda’s transition to the future being The Elder Scrolls Online<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

ESO <\/em>has been a major part of the current generation’s line up of MMORPGs, alongside genre juggernauts like Guild Wars 2 <\/em>and Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>. The Elder Scrolls<\/em> title now looks to continue its legacy with a fresh coat of paint for the next generation.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>DOOM Eternal<\/h2>\n

DOOM Eternal<\/a><\/em> was not only one of the major gaming highlights of 2020 but was an early contender for Game of the Year. With fresh new ways to maim and dismember demons, DOOM<\/em>‘s latest installment was a fun romp for many fans. As part of Bethesda’s transition to next-gen, DOOM Eternal<\/em> will also be getting a free patch to fit on the PS5 and Series X.<\/p>\n

While the release date of the upgrade<\/a> has yet to be announced, a new, glistening edition of blood is\u00a0on the horizon to help tie people over before the release of Starfield<\/em>, The Elder Scrolls VI<\/em>, and maybe even the next DOOM <\/em>game.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege<\/h2>\n

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege<\/em> has had quite the journey. Initially releasing with lukewarm responses, Siege <\/em>has become somewhat of a cult hit within the last few years. With little exaggeration, Rainbow Six Siege<\/em> has been one of the highlights for multiplayer shooters within current-gen consoles.<\/p>\n

Now, Ubisoft is looking to bring that legacy to next-gen consoles with an upcoming update. This means that long-time players will get to continue their gaming sessions with brand new graphics, while a new line of players can see what all of the hype is about.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Mortal Kombat 11<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One got to start their generations with the release of Mortal Kombat X<\/em>. With NetherRealm Studios delivering gruesome gameplay at brute force, that generation got to close out its lifecycle with the release of Mortal Kombat 11<\/em>. While fans had plenty of time to break bones in beautiful, X-rated fashion on current consoles, they’ll have even more opportunities with the PS5 and Series X, as Mortal Kombat 11<\/em> gets its special upgrade.<\/p>\n

From\u00a0November 17th,\u00a0Mortal Kombat 11<\/em>‘s next-gen upgrade will be available, allowing the game\u00a0to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and help open up a fantastic generation with some fantastic gore.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>For Honor<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

For Honor<\/em> has given fans some of the most defined combat ever seen in a role-playing game (and some fighting games<\/a>) and has been letting gamers slash, hack, and lead armies for more than 3 years now. That momentum has yet to cease, as Ubisoft is looking to bring For Honor<\/em> to a new home.<\/p>\n

As part of a long-line of upgrades with other Ubisoft games, For Honor<\/em> will make its swords and axes compatible with next-gen consoles and with some fresh polish, too.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Dead By Daylight<\/h2>\n

Dead by Daylight<\/em> has been an independent success that’s been haunting gamers for more than four years. This asymmetrical game pits prospective victims against one player that’s allowed to act as a horror film killer. And, after a long series of updates, this game allows people to play as a variety of their horror heroes, such as Freddy Krueger, Ghost Face, and even Silent Hill’s Pyramid Head.<\/p>\n

The nightmare doesn’t seem to be ending with PS4 and Xbox One, however, as a next-gen upgrade looks set to bring Dead by Daylight<\/em>‘s iconic roster of killers to the PS5 and Series X.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Nioh 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Nioh 2<\/em> is a PS4 exclusive that had fans everywhere cheering its praises as soon as it came out earlier this year. People were already heralding it as a possible candidate for Game of the Year, with some even comparing and rivaling it to FromSoftware’s own installment to samurai Souls-games<\/a>, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

While Sekiro <\/em>will be backward compatible with the PS5 and Series X, only Nioh 2<\/em> will have the full-enhancement treatment as it upgrades to PS5 (as well as transitions to a PC version).<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Borderlands 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Fans waited nearly seven years for the next, big installment to the Borderlands<\/em> franchise, and now, they won’t have to wait too long to play it on next-gen consoles. With Borderlands 3<\/a><\/em> appearing at the tail end of the current generation of consoles, there\u00a0was some worry that people wouldn’t get to fully enjoy the long-awaited game before some of its core elements became obsolete in the face of the new generation. Thankfully,\u00a0a next-gen patch will fix just that.<\/p>\n

If people didn’t have enough fun shooting and looting on PS4 and Xbox One, they’ll have even more chances to do so on PS5 and Xbox Series X and in luxurious 60 FPS and 4k, too.<\/p>\n
