The Sims 4<\/i><\/b> has celebrated a few milestones in recent years, from the franchise turning 20 to hitting over 10 million active players across all platforms. Among these achievements is the tenth expansion pack to <\/span>The Sims 4<\/span><\/i><\/a> base game, titled <\/span>Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i>. The new addition to the game is based on Japanese culture and is set in the picturesque mountain town of Mt. Komorebi.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sims<\/span><\/i> team severely needed a win with this expansion, especially because the last game pack, <\/span>The Sims 4-Star Wars: Journey to Batuu<\/span><\/i>, was poorly received by fans and critics. The pack lacked depth and seemed like an advertisement for Walt Disney World theme parks rather than a well-thought-out addition to <\/span>The Sims<\/span><\/i> franchise. <\/span>Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i> needed to blow players out of the water – and it does.<\/span><\/p>\n

The buzz for this expansion started early, especially because it was so different from the previously released packs for <\/span>The Sims 4<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Sims <\/span><\/i>players haven\u2019t been able to play in an Asian-inspired world <\/span>since <\/span>The Sims 3: World Adventures<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/a> so the news of <\/span>Snowy Escape <\/span><\/i>already felt like a breath of fresh mountain air. However, with expectations being so high, there was always the fear that <\/span>Snowy Escape <\/span><\/i>wouldn\u2019t live up to the hype. Luckily, it should far surpass players\u2019 expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Create-a-Sim items for <\/span>Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i> fit in perfectly with the pack and feel like a good balance between traditional Japanese clothing and more modern items. Certain items feel more traditional to Mt. Komorebi, like the kimonos and yukatas, while others are more applicable to all Sims. Players will have a lot of fun mixing these <\/span>wintry clothes into their Sims\u2019 wardrobe<\/span><\/a>, especially when crafting fashionable winter wear outfits.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Build\/Buy mode items also have immense detail put into them. One of the most impressive aspects is the two-toned wood that\u2019s now available for certain wallpapers, fences, doors, windows\u2014anything that would build the structure of the home. The new counters have slotted shelves underneath for players to decorate, and the new stove even comes without a headboard. Players unfamiliar with Japanese architecture may have a hard time building a traditional-looking home in Mt. Komorebi, but <\/span>part of the fun of <\/span>The Sims<\/span><\/i><\/a> is letting the imagination run wild.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mt. Komorebi is absolutely stunning, with three different neighborhoods each focused on a different part of mountain life. Yukimatsu is the snow-covered area home to the Onsen Bathhouse, extravagant rental lots, slopes for skiing or snowboarding, and snowy hiking trails\u2014complete with places to hone Sims\u2019 newfound rock climbing skills. Senbamachi translates to \u201ctown of 1000 leaves,\u201d and is the essence of a rustic mountain town, especially with its hiking trails and the Festival of Light. Wakaba is the final neighborhood and a bit of a disappointment, simply because there isn\u2019t much to do there besides the Festival of Youth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The animations for running around in the snow are impressive too. Honing the <\/span>snowboarding and skiing skill<\/span><\/a> starts on the bunny slope, and when Sims are ready, they can attempt the Ludicrous slope at either low, medium, or high intensity. It\u2019s incredibly satisfying to see Sims go from inept to expert, especially with their flips and tricks. Rock climbing as an added skill is also very interesting to watch, but has some issues too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sims have the option of buying Rock Climbing Gear to help them climb the rock walls easier, which is a great choice to have. Sims can only buy this gear from a computer, though, so if the gear turns to \u201cpoor\u201d or \u201cbroken\u201d quality and players don\u2019t have a computer in their vacation lot, they effectively cannot rock climb anymore. The gear isn\u2019t available from a phone or the newly patched mailbox, which can make honing <\/span>the rock climbing skill more challenging<\/span><\/a> than necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rock climbing also helps build the fitness skill, which makes sense from a realism standpoint, but tracking the skill progress on both is tedious. It seems the fitness skill is the meter that pops up when Sims are rock climbing, so players need to open the skills menu to see how much their Sim is progressing in rock climbing. Players who look forward to reaching the summit of Mt. Komorebi will have to deal with this extensively before being able to attempt the excursion to the summit.<\/span><\/p>\n

An excursion to the peak of Mt. Komorebi <\/span>requires at least two Sims<\/span><\/a>, but the party can have up to four. Players will need to make sure their Sims are well prepared for the journey, carrying food and shelter for the ascent. There are three different rock walls that must be conquered before the summit, and only Sims with a rock climbing skill of 6 or higher can attempt to climb the final tier. The last wall can have deadly consequences if not successfully climbed, so consider this a warning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, <\/span>The Sims 4: Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i> adds a lot of elements<\/span><\/a> that players have been asking about for quite some time. The addition of Lifestyles helps develop Sims\u2019 personalities in a way the game hasn\u2019t done before, and hiking is a group activity that lets Sims get to interact with and spend time with each other to help build Sentiments towards each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the new traits and aspirations still read like a tutorial for the expansion, it\u2019s clear that a lot of thought and effort went into the conception of <\/span>Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>The Sims<\/span><\/i> needed to come back stronger than ever after its last controversy<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Snowy Escape<\/span><\/i> did just that and more. Players\u2019 enchantment with Mt. Komorebi is sure to stick around like the snow on the mountaintop thanks to the endless possibilities the world provides.<\/span><\/p>\n
