Volume is a funny word though and it\u2019s precisely what some of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/christopher-nolan\/\">Nolan\u2019s<\/a> peers have brought up to him according to Tom Shone\u2019s book \u201c<em>The Nolan Variations<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Shone\u2019s book is written in collaboration with Nolan himself and aims to take a close in-depth look at the man\u2019s childhood and upbringing, how his overall filmmaking vision came to be and what his influences are, all the way up to <em>Tenet<\/em>, his most recent film.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tenet-christopher-nolan-says-did-fine-but-studios-arent-getting-it\/\">Christopher Nolan Says Tenet Was a Success, Actually<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In it, there are plenty of anecdotes from Nolan, noting his opinions and thoughts on several matters throughout the years and on the topic of <em>Interstellar\u2019s<\/em> sound he points out \u201cother filmmakers\u2026 would say, \u2018I just saw your film, and the dialogue is inaudible.\u2019 Some people thought maybe the music\u2019s too loud, but the truth was it was kind of the whole enchilada of how we had chosen to mix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antovolk\/status\/1326649441294618625?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is quoted by Nolan as an example of just how conservative people can be with sound, unlike the actual footage, claiming <em>Interstellar<\/em> was aiming very high when it came to sound engineering as a way to transmit a<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ea-game-remasters-dead-space-dragon-age\/\"> \u201cfeeling of physicality\u201d in space<\/a>, specifically suggesting the film is meant for the IMAX experience where all Hans Zimmer\u2019s spectacular work can be better appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>One notable example of this approach can be seen (or rather heard) in <em>Dunkirk<\/em>, where Zimmer first recorded a traditional film score that\u00a0Nolan tossed out\u00a0 in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dunkirk-fan-edit-black-white-silent-movie\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the movie\u2019s famously \u201cnauseating\u201d soundtrack<\/a>, designed to make audiences feel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-objective-points-reaction\/\">the same despair as the soldiers<\/a>. Almost all of Nolan&#8217;s films have\u00a0very distinct sound qualities that could be considered loud or unorthodox, but <em>Interstellar<\/em> and <em>Dunkirk<\/em> definitely stand out as two that heavily rely on sound as part of the final product.<\/p>\n<p>With statements like these, it\u2019s no wonder Nolan is among the first pleading to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/movie-theaters-bankrupt-congress-bailout\/\">U.S. Congress to bail out movie theaters<\/a>.\u00a0For him the cinema theater experience is unique, it\u2019s the reason he makes films and they define the concept of what a movie really is.
