As its name indicates, the non-profit research organization is dedicated to making the first contact with\u00a0extraterrestrial civilizations.<\/p>\n<p>The original <em>Star Trek<\/em> series followed the voyages of\u00a0Captain\u00a0James T. Kirk and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise as they embarked on a five-year mission to explore &#8220;strange new worlds.&#8221; In joining METI, who portrays\u00a0Captain Christopher Pike in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-trek-discovery-season-3\/\">CBS All Access&#8217; <em>Star Trek: Discovery<\/em><\/a>, Mount appears to be intent on living up to the franchise&#8217;s concept of seeking\u00a0out &#8220;new life and new civilizations&#8221; in real life.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-trek-voyager-takes-another-trip-as-a-3d-printed-microswimmer\/\">Scientists Use Mini Star Trek Voyager to Study How Bacteria Moves<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Founded by astrobiologist\u00a0Douglas Vakoch in 2015, METI was designed to expand upon <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ridley-scott-rethink-alien-5\/\">the search for\u00a0extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)<\/a>. While other organizations dedicated to the same cause\u00a0focus their efforts on listening for messages from advanced civilizations, METI distinguishes itself by creating and transmitting its own signals to nearby stars in hopes of receiving a reply. &#8220;If other civilizations are simply listening, and not transmitting, we&#8217;ll never make contact if we limit ourselves to standard SETI strategies,&#8221; said Vakoch in a statement. &#8220;We&#8217;re delighted to welcome Anson to METI&#8217;s leadership team as we continue to reach out to other worlds, letting them know we want to make first contact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ansonmount\/status\/1328737135189487621\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a distinct privilege to be asked to join the outstanding scientists, artists, and innovators that make up the METI team,&#8221; added Mount in his own statement.\u00a0&#8220;I look forward to helping this organization expand its footprint in our cultural landscape and educate the general public about our endeavors to connect with extraterrestrial intelligence through scientific methods as we continue to grapple with the implications of this work. As a Starfleet Captain, it brings me unbridled joy to be able to say that I am actually sending out a hail.&#8221;\u00a0Mount joins\u00a0METI&#8217;s Board of Directors while he is also set to reprise his role as Captain Pike in CBS All Access&#8217; S<em>tar Trek:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-update-details-story\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strange New Worlds<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>New Worlds<\/em> will follow Mount&#8217;s Captain Pike as he leads the crew of the USS Enterprise during the decade before the events of the original series. <em>Discovery<\/em> veterans\u00a0Rebecca Romijn and\u00a0Ethan Peck will reprise their respective roles as Number One and Spock as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mount is not the only celebrity to take steps towards boldly exploring what lies beyond Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.
