Disney’s 20th Century Studios is\u00a0moving forward with plans to revive the\u00a0Predator<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>film series with a fifth installment of the franchise. Now, the studio has enlisted\u00a010 Cloverfield Lane<\/em> director Dan Trachtenberg to helm the project.<\/p>\n

The Predator<\/em> franchise launched with the 1987 science-fiction horror classic starring\u00a0Arnold Schwarzenegger as\u00a0Major Alan “Dutch” Schafer<\/a>, the leader of an elite\u00a0paramilitary\u00a0rescue team that finds itself being hunted by a technologically-advanced alien in the jungle of\u00a0Central America. In addition to receiving\u00a0three sequels and a handful of crossovers with the Alien<\/em> franchise, Predator\u00a0<\/em>spawned a successful media franchise consisting of related books, comics, and video games.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports\u00a0Trachtenberg will direct the new Predator<\/em> film a script written by\u00a0Kingdom<\/em> and Jack Ryan<\/em> scribe\u00a0Patrick Aison. Although plot details for the next entry in the franchise are not being divulged, the outlet notes that\u00a0Trachtenberg’s film will not continue the storyline established by 2018’s\u00a0The Predator<\/em>. Directed by Shane Black, who co-starred with\u00a0Schwarzenegger in the original film, The Predator<\/em> concluded with the U.S. government obtaining technology capable of killing the extraterrestrial hunters.\u00a0While 20th Century Studios handled the distribution of all four previous Predator<\/em> films,\u00a0Trachtenberg’s\u00a0entry will be the first produced since the company was acquired by Disney<\/a> in 2019.<\/p>\n

10 Cloverfield Lane<\/em>, a psychological thriller starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead\u00a0and the second installment of the Cloverfield<\/em> franchise,\u00a0marked\u00a0Trachtenberg’s directorial debut. Before then,\u00a0Trachtenberg was best known for directing short films, including\u00a0Portal: No Escape <\/em>and\u00a0More Than You Can Chew<\/i><\/em>. He has since added episodes of Black Mirror<\/em> and Amazon’s The Boys<\/em><\/a> to his directing resume.<\/p>\n

The Predator<\/em> franchise isn’t the only 20th Century Studios IP being revived by Disney. A Home Alone<\/em> reboot<\/a> is\u00a0currently in production\u00a0and will be released exclusively on Disney+ on a yet-to-be-determined date.<\/p>\n

The Alien<\/em> franchise, on the other hand, appears to be having more difficulty getting back off the ground. Director Ridley Scott has already stated that he may have to rethink his plans for the Alien<\/em> films<\/a> as recently as September.<\/p>\n

Predator<\/em> is now available on Amazon Prime Video.<\/p>\n
