Given how many references to previous Legend of Zelda<\/em> games the original Hyrule Warriors<\/em> had, fans won\u2019t be too shocked to find that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/strong><\/em> has a few of its own, most of which naturally allude to Breath of the Wild<\/em><\/a>. However, most fans probably weren\u2019t expecting the game to make what might possibly be a reference to what many consider the darkest chapter in the entire franchise: the Zelda<\/em> CD-i games.<\/p>\n

1993\u2019s Link: The Faces of Evil<\/em> and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon<\/em> are oddities for multiple reasons, not the least of which being that they were developed not for any Nintendo system but for Phillips CD-i media players. Produced on shoestring budgets with short development cycles and minimal involvement from Nintendo, these games have become infamous for their low quality, with their janky animated cutscenes in particular inspiring an endless amount of memes<\/a> throughout the years.<\/p>\n

Now players think they\u2019ve found a reference to the CD-i games in Hyrule Warriors:\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a>. One of the locations players can unlock to earn upgrades in the game is the Military Training Camp, where they can spend rupees to level up their characters. As spotted by Gamechamp on Twitter, an interesting message appears on the overworld map once players unlock the Training Camp: \u201cAfter proving that you have defeated plenty of monsters, the instructor recognized your battle ability. He said he will train you anytime-as long as you have enough rupees.\u201d<\/p>\n

That last line seems to be a pretty clear callback to Morshu, one of the NPCs players would encounter in Link: The Faces of Evil<\/em> and a owner of a general store in the Goronu area. Specifically, one of his lines of dialogue has him telling Link that he can sell him a variety of items \u201cas long as you have enough rupees.\u201d<\/p>\n
