And since it\u2019s based on one of the most quintessential movie genres in American cinema \u2013 the western \u2013 it\u2019s pretty well-primed for a film adaptation. Movies based on video games<\/a> usually end up disappointing fans of both the games they\u2019re based on and movies in general, but a Red Dead<\/em> movie could be the video game movie world\u2019s diamond in the rough.<\/p>\n

The key to making a Red Dead Redemption<\/em> movie work would be casting the perfect actor to play the game\u2019s grizzled antihero John Marston<\/a> in live-action.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Christian Bale<\/h2>\n

In American Psycho<\/em>, The Fighter<\/em>, and Ford v Ferrari<\/em>, Christian Bale has more than proven that he\u2019s one of the finest actors working today<\/a>. Whether he\u2019s playing John Connor or Dick Cheney, Bale always brings nuance to every performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also one of the few actors who still stars in westerns, having appeared in 3:10 to Yuma<\/em> and Hostiles<\/em>. If Bale can play Batman, he can play John Marston.<\/p>\n

Best known for playing Sawyer in Lost<\/em>, Josh Holloway\u2019s career as a leading man has been a long time coming. Outside of a minor role in Mission: Impossible \u2013 Ghost Protocol<\/em>, Holloway was considered for the role of Hawkeye in the MCU<\/a>, but didn\u2019t clinch it.<\/p>\n

Holloway has the cool charisma to bring Marston to life. His guest spot on Community<\/em> as a cowboy showed that he looks even more awesome in western attire.<\/p>\n

Although the show suffered from weak ratings during its three-season run on HBO, The Leftovers<\/em> makes a good case for Justin Theroux as a casting choice for John Marston in a Red Dead<\/em> movie.<\/p>\n

His lead character in The Leftovers<\/em>, disturbed police chief Kevin Garvey, is just as competent, badass, and world-weary as Marston. Theroux has also given delightfully enigmatic supporting turns in thrillers like Mulholland Drive<\/em> and The Girl on the Train<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no actor in the world who looks more like how John Marston is animated<\/a> than Anson Mount. He\u2019s primarily a TV actor, but a Red Dead<\/em> movie could help him cross over onto the big screen.<\/p>\n

Bernthal has a way of making gruff, violent characters seem lovable and there\u2019s no doubt that he\u2019d make for a captivating John Marston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Karl Urban<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although his performance is majorly underrated compared to that of his co-stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock, Karl Urban\u2019s turn as Bones in the Star Trek<\/em> reboot series proved that the actor is more than capable of satisfying fans of a beloved character with a new take.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s before mentioning Urban\u2019s greatest role. The actor gave Judge Dredd fans the movie they\u2019d always wanted to see<\/a> with 2012\u2019s Dredd<\/em>, an ultraviolent ride that doesn\u2019t sanitize its source material any more than a Red Dead<\/em> movie should.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Keanu Reeves<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Since he\u2019s one of the most popular actors in the world as well as one of the most committed action movie stars, Keanu Reeves<\/a> has become a popular fan casting for a live-action incarnation of Red Dead Redemption<\/em>\u2019s John Marston.<\/p>\n

Reeves could bring the same dedication and intensity to the action scenes of a Red Dead<\/em> movie that he continues to bring to the John Wick<\/em> franchise with each successive sequel.<\/p>\n

The first name in \u201crough around the edges\u201d types, Norman Reedus would be perfect for the role of John Marston. Renowned for playing Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead<\/em><\/a>, Reedus has been in need of another iconic role for a while.<\/p>\n

Based on the brooding intensity that he brought to the role of Llewelyn Moss<\/a> in the Coen brothers\u2019 masterpiece No Country for Old Men<\/em>, Brolin would probably give a terrific performance as John Marston in a Red Dead<\/em> movie.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Viggo Mortensen<\/h2>\n

Although he might be getting a little old to do the part justice, Viggo Mortensen could make for a fantastic John Marston. He\u2019s well-versed in playing grizzled antiheroes, thanks to his underrated gems A History of Violence<\/em> and Eastern Promises<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mortensen has already played one iconic badass on horseback, Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy<\/a>, and it\u2019s about time he played another one.<\/p>\n
