PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan has been doing interviews lately to discuss the release of the PlayStation 5<\/strong>. In one of the latest interviews, this time with Eurogamer, Ryan took a break from the usual PS5<\/a> questions to share the challenges of developing new IP.<\/p>\n

Though some of the best PS4 exclusives were brand new IP, such as Ghost of Tsushima<\/em><\/a> and Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>, the process behind making such games was a difficult one for Sony. According to Ryan, while Sony thinks \u201cvery deeply and very carefully\u201d about balancing its portfolio between new entries in beloved series and fresh beginnings, the PlayStation 4 generation was a \u201cvery risky\u201d one for the company.<\/p>\n

As discussed by the PlayStation CEO, not only did Sony\u2019s purchase of Insomniac<\/a> require a large investment, but the cost of each new franchise required a big gamble to be taken by the company. As said by the PlayStation CEO, \u201cthe thing with those blockbuster games is that they need a box office release,\u201d with Ryan going on to share that \u201cthey cost more than $100 million to make these days.\u201d This incredible amount of money could be wasted if the games do not perform well, but fortunately for Sony, its investments paid off.<\/p>\n

As mentioned by Ryan, Sony launched a new IP \u201cfour times in the PS4 generation.\u201d While\u00a0all the PS4 games<\/a>\u00a0being referenced are not mentioned specifically, they likely are Days Gone<\/em>, Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>, Ghost of Tsushima<\/em>, and Death Stranding<\/em>. The critical and financial success of Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em> and Ghost of Tsushima<\/em> speaks for itself, and while Days Gone<\/em> was not quite as popular, it still performed well. Even the controversial Death Stranding<\/em> was a wise investment given all the discussion it brought, with the game setting up an even closer working relationship between Sony and Hideo Kojima as well.<\/p>\n

Still, the $100 million investment is understandably huge, and it helps further explain the Sony CEO\u2019s comments on $70 games<\/a>. The company clearly took risks by letting its first-party studios do something new, as more sequels would have been far safer and less costly. It is commendable that Sony took those risks to bring its fans some great new games, though, and much of the PlayStation 4\u2019s success can be largely attributed to some of those \u201cvery risky\u201d new IPs.<\/p>\n

With the PlayStation 5, Sony is clearly looking to keep the \u201cbalance between\u201d starting new series and continuing to build off those that are already popular. With God of War<\/em> and Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em> sequels on the way alongside new IP such as Housemarque\u2019s Returnal<\/em><\/a>, PlayStation fans should expect risks to continue being taken.<\/p>\n
